Truck driver slams anti-ICE protesters blocking his route
Anti-ICE protesters blocked a garbage truck and clashed with federal agents outside Newark's Delaney Hall detention center, leading to three arrests as demonstrations continued.
A heated confrontation erupted outside Newark’s Delaney Hall immigration detention center Wednesday night when anti-ICE protesters blocked a garbage truck driver from performing his duties, as violent clashes between Antifa demonstrators and federal agents entered another night of disorder.
Video footage captured by Freedom News shows the frustrated driver of a Regional Industries truck from Elizabeth confronting masked demonstrators who had prevented him from accessing the facility, according to New York Post.
“If I hit one of y’all, I go to jail,” the driver shouted at the crowd blocking his path. What’s wrong with ya all? he demanded before eventually managing to drive away from the scene.
Violent Scenes Outside Detention Facility
The demonstrations outside Delaney Hall descended into chaos as immigration enforcement officers deployed batons against aggressive protesters. Many demonstrators wore masks and protective goggles in anticipation of pepper spray used by ICE agents to maintain order.
Protesters wielded orange traffic cones against federal agents attempting to clear the roadway. The demonstrators had constructed barricades using cement blocks to obstruct access to the facility. Detainees inside the building could be seen waving from windows as the confrontation unfolded below.
The crowd directed disturbing chants at law enforcement personnel, including threats telling officers to harm themselves. Federal agents remained undeterred and continued efforts to restore order.
Arrests Made as Protests Continue
Three arrests have been made as of Thursday morning, with protesters vowing to maintain their encampment outside the center until all detainees are released, WABC reported. The demonstrations began over Memorial Day weekend, with participants displaying Antifa flags and wearing keffiyeh scarves.
The protests coincided with reports that hundreds of ICE detainees inside the 1,000-bed facility initiated a hunger and labor strike. Approximately 300 detainees have reportedly refused food since Friday, citing objections to conditions within the detention center.
Officials Dispute Hunger Strike Claims
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin flatly denied reports of an ongoing hunger strike at Delaney Hall, asserting there are no substandard conditions at the facility. He sharply criticized New Jersey sanctuary politicians for spreading misinformation while seeking political fundraising opportunities.
Mullin condemned dozens of New Jersey sanctuary politicians who spent Memorial Day weekend attacking ICE law enforcement instead of supporting officers who remove dangerous criminals from their communities. These detainees include murderers, pedophiles, rapists and drug traffickers, he emphasized in a post on X.
The Department of Homeland Security reiterated Tuesday that detainees receive three meals daily, clean water, clothing, bedding, showers, hygiene products, and opportunities to contact family members and legal counsel. The agency noted that comprehensive healthcare services are provided, including medical, dental and mental health care, with 24-hour emergency access available.
For many illegal aliens, this represents the best healthcare they have received in their entire lives, the department stated.
Democratic Politicians Challenge Conditions
Democratic critics including Representative Jerrold Nadler of New York and Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey have vigorously disputed the government’s characterization of conditions at the facility.
Nadler, who toured Delaney Hall on Wednesday, described food portions as very sparse and claimed meals are served at inconvenient hours beginning at 4 a.m. He alleged that maggots have been found in food served to detainees. The congressman also cited specific cases, including a female detainee waiting a month for a mammogram despite a breast lump, and a male inmate with colon cancer allegedly not receiving treatment, PIX11 reported.
Booker similarly raised concerns about medical care quality, particularly for female detainees. He characterized the access to medical attention as unsatisfactory and potentially dangerous to detainees’ health conditions based on accounts from women held at the facility.
