Tories Fight to Reclaim Support in Crucial By-Election Battles
The Conservative Party faces crucial by-elections across Britain this week in traditional strongholds, testing its recovery amid competition from Reform UK and other right-wing parties.
According to GB News, Kemi Badenoch‘s Conservatives will contest vacated council seats in Cheshire, Scotland, Dorset and Wales as the party attempts to reverse months of declining support caused by what observers describe as a divided right.
The party has hemorrhaged votes to Nigel Farage‘s Reform UK and Rupert Lowe‘s Restore Britain, fracturing the conservative voter base and challenging the durability of Britain’s traditional two-party system.
The by-election battles come at a moment of cautious optimism for the Conservatives, who have seen their polling numbers climb to 20 per cent this week according to YouGov data. The figures place them level with Labour and just four points behind Reform, as GB News reports.
However, the party faces competition not only from the right but also from a reinvigorated Labour Party operating under the imminent leadership of Andy Burnham.
Scotland Test in Aberdeenshire
One of the most closely watched contests will unfold in Peterhead South and Cruden on Aberdeenshire Council, triggered by the death of Councillor George Hall at age 65.
Hall was remembered for his dedicated service to constituents, continuing his duties while battling serious illness with dignity and strength.
The Scottish Conservatives currently hold a majority on Aberdeenshire Council with 20 of 69 seats and are defending Hall’s former position.
The race has been complicated by the candidacy of Ross Thomson, a former Conservative MP for Aberdeen South, who is now running as an independent after defecting to Reform last year.
The constituency is also represented at the parliamentary level by Seamus Logan of the Scottish National Party, who won the Aberdeenshire North and Moray East seat in 2024.
Divided Right Hampers Conservative Recovery
The multiple contests across England, Scotland and Wales will serve as a barometer for whether the Conservative Party can successfully reunite right-leaning voters who have splintered to alternative parties over the past year.
