Steve Hilton Warns of ‘Disaster’ if He Misses Top Two in California Primary
Steve Hilton warned that failing to finish in California's top-two primary would doom not only his gubernatorial bid but also Republican down-ballot races statewide.
Speaking on “The Alex Marlow Show,” Hilton emphasized the critical stakes of California’s unusual primary system, according to Breitbart News. The Republican candidate warned that if two Democrats advance to the general election for governor, the consequences would extend far beyond the gubernatorial race itself.
Hilton stated his campaign team remains confident about making the top two, but cautioned supporters against complacency. He outlined how a Democrat-only general election would demoralize Republican voters throughout California, potentially undermining down-ballot races for state legislature and Congress.
The former Fox commentator specifically noted that control of the House of Representatives could be affected, along with critical issues such as voter identification requirements. He positioned himself as the only candidate for change who can possibly get into the top two.
California’s top-two primary system allows all candidates from all parties to compete on a single ballot, with the two highest vote-getters advancing to the general election regardless of party affiliation. Critics of the system argue it can result in single-party general elections in heavily Democratic or Republican districts.
