Spain Poll: 60% Reject Socialist Government, 30% Call It Disastrous
A Sigma Dos poll shows 60 percent of Spaniards hold negative views of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's socialist government, with a third calling it disastrous amid corruption scandals.
The survey, conducted by Spanish market research firm Sigma Dos and published by newspaper El Mundo on Monday, paints a grim picture for the socialist administration as the country heads toward elections next year, according to Breitbart News.
Spain is scheduled to hold fresh elections no later than August 22, 2027. Despite the conservative People’s Party securing the largest number of seats in the August 2023 elections, Pedro Sánchez and his Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) managed to retain power by forging alliances with smaller leftist parties, providing enough votes to secure Sánchez’s current four-year term.
The Sánchez government now faces mounting challenges as it enters the final year of the parliamentary term. PSOE has been hit by multiple corruption scandals and faces widespread public rejection, particularly over its deeply unpopular mass amnesty scheme that allowed approximately 1.2 million illegal migrants to apply for legal status in Spain along with full access to state benefits.
The Sigma Dos poll found that 60 percent of Spaniards hold some form of negative opinion about the current legislature, compared to just 12 percent who view it as “good, positive, and competent.” Within that dissatisfied majority, 30.3 percent specifically characterized the government’s performance as “disastrous,” “nefarious,” and “ruinous.”
Additionally, 31 percent of respondents stated they could not identify any achievement attributable to the current Spanish government. Other critical assessments from participants included terms such as “deceitful,” “fraudulent,” “chaotic,” “unstable,” “confusing,” and “disappointing.”
Given the widespread rejection of the socialist government and the current political climate, 41 percent of those surveyed believe the elections will be moved forward to sometime during the first quarter of 2027.
El Mundo reported that the survey also gauged public opinion on specific policy decisions taken during the current legislative term. The mass amnesty for illegal migrants received a negative response from 53.6 percent of respondents, making it one of the most unpopular measures.
On the question of increasing Spain’s military spending as a NATO member—a contentious issue for Prime Minister Sánchez—48.4 percent expressed support for the increase, while 42.2 percent opposed it. Another 9.3 percent declined to answer the question.
The polling results form part of a broader survey that suggests PSOE now faces its worst electoral scenario. The party is projected to lose approximately 17 seats in the upcoming election, a loss that would likely prevent the Spanish left from forming a coalition government similar to the one assembled in 2023.
In contrast, the Sigma Dos projections indicate that the People’s Party and the populist party Vox are poised to make significant parliamentary gains in next year’s elections, potentially securing a comfortable enough margin to form a coalition government between the two right-wing parties.
