Spain: Police Warn ‘Collapse’ of ID Card System for Illegals
Spanish police warn the nation's immigration system faces collapse as PM Sánchez's government processes 1.2 million illegal migrant amnesty applications amid shortages and criminal exploitation.
According to Breitbart, unnamed police sources have told local media that Spain is catastrophically unprepared for the sheer workload of issuing that many Foreigner Identity Cards over the coming months, with the added complication of organized mafias reselling appointment slots for enormous sums.
The Sánchez government is currently processing the mountain of amnesty applications filed by illegal migrants before the submission deadline of June 30. Initially, Spanish authorities claimed that around half a million illegals would receive amnesty, granting them residence and work permits along with other state benefits. The final tally of applications, however, more than doubled those early projections.
Everyone who legally resides, works, or studies in Spain receives a Foreigner Identity Card, known as a TIE, which certifies the holder’s legal presence on Spanish soil. Under the mass amnesty scheme, each beneficiary will be issued a TIE to officially designate them as legal residents.
Spanish government guidelines stipulate that authorities have up to three months from the close of the application window to process all submissions. The unprecedented volume of 1.2 million applications has sparked alarm about a systemic breakdown in TIE issuance logistics.
Police sources speaking to the newspaper El Mundo this week warned that obtaining a TIE in Spain will become an agonizing ordeal, not only for applicants but for the overwhelmed officers tasked with processing them. The sources cited chronic shortages of personnel and technical resources among migration officials, as Breitbart reports. Spain’s National Police, which plays a role in issuing TIEs to foreigners, will also be severely impacted.
Most alarmingly, police warned that criminal mafias are further complicating an already chaotic situation. Unscrupulous IT technicians are bulk-booking TIE appointments and then reselling them to desperate migrants for anywhere between 100 and 2,000 euros.
Once payment is received, the criminal operators input the migrant’s data into the system and formalize the reserved appointment, making it appear as though it was legitimately booked. Police sources told El Mundo that this practice contributes to and exacerbates the collapse of the entire TIE system.
Spanish law enforcement has also warned in recent weeks that the amnesty could ultimately force Spain to absorb as many as five million additional migrants in the years ahead. Once illegals obtain legal status, they become eligible for family reunification provisions, enabling them to legally bring relatives into the country.
The police sources expressed particular concern that criminal networks will exploit this lucrative opportunity. There are fears that individuals abroad will pay people with legal status to falsely pose as family members, such as children or parents, in exchange for fraudulent documents and certificates.
Such cases are already being detected, sometimes involving brought-in witnesses, but the sources warned they are only manageable now because application numbers remain relatively contained. As the floodgates open fully, authorities anticipate being overwhelmed by both the volume and the fraud.
