Soros Pledges $300 Million for Open Society in the US
Under Alex Soros, the Open Society Foundations pledged $300 million over five years to bolster U.S. civil liberties and labor rights amid rising tensions with the Trump administration.
This move comes at a time of intense political confrontation. President Donald Trump’s administration has repeatedly accused the Soros family of inciting violence and division in the country. Of the total amount, $20 million is already allocated for the current year.
The funds will be directed toward
- legal battles
- protection of non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
- documentation of cases of government corruption
This program represents the foundation’s first large-scale initiative focused exclusively on the United States, following Alex Soros’s assumption of leadership and a period of internal restructuring.
OSF intends to support policies at the state level that can be implemented more broadly. According to its leadership, the approach links political rights with economic prosperity, regarding them as interconnected. Alex Soros himself stated that guaranteed freedoms and widespread economic prosperity serve as a strong defense against a “closed society.”
At the same time, allies of President Trump in Congress have requested that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Department of Justice investigate organizations alleged to support domestic terrorism, illegal immigration, or certain climate programs.
Last December, then-Attorney General Pam Bondi ordered investigations into nonprofit organizations connected to the antifa movement. A spokesperson for the Department of Justice declined to comment specifically on the Soros foundation, noting that no statements are made about ongoing investigations.
The foundation itself maintains that it does not intend to yield to the pressures.
