Smithsonian Pushes Communist Ideology Founders Would Reject

The Smithsonian Institution, receiving over $800 million annually in federal funding, has been accused of promoting Marxist ideology through exhibits criticizing American values and founders.

With roughly 20 million annual visitors and an additional 20 million students reached through its educational programs, the 179-year-old institution wields enormous influence over how Americans understand their history. Yet that platform is now being used to promote the message that foundational American values and beloved cultural icons are rooted in racism and white supremacy.

Teaching Children to Hate America

The institution’s current exhibits and educational materials teach visitors that characteristics such as politeness, punctuality, objectivity, and hard work represent white supremacy. Even Mickey Mouse has been characterized as a form of blackface, while no major exhibit honors George Washington or other Founding Fathers.

Instead, Benjamin Franklin is portrayed as a vile slave owner whose scientific achievements should be attributed to enslaved people. Christopher Columbus is presented as a psychopathic killer and racist. American territory itself is described as stolen land.

The museum complex simultaneously celebrates transgenderism, bondage, and sadomasochism through sexually explicit exhibits and promotes the idea that illegal migrants deserve voting rights.

Preserving Riot Debris as Historical Artifacts

During the 2020 Black Lives Matter riots, then-Secretary Lonnie Bunch dispatched curators to collect trash left behind by arsonists, vandals, and looters, designating these items as historical artifacts requiring preservation for posterity, according to the Heritage Foundation’s documentation of the institution’s decline.

The Smithsonian operates on an annual budget of approximately $1.3 billion, with 62 percent derived from American taxpayers.

Director Displays Arrogance Under Congressional Scrutiny

Anthea Hartig, the Smithsonian’s current director, demonstrated contempt and defiance during congressional testimony this week when questioned about the institution’s ideological agenda.

The California-based director, who previously described herself as supported by the cushions of whiteness and the pillows of the bourgeoisie, has publicly stated that history serves as a prime tool of social justice and explained how the institution works to reframe the traditional celebratory narrative of American history.

Texas Republican Representative Brandon Gill confronted Hartig about specific exhibits and educational materials during the Tuesday hearing.

When asked directly whether Mickey Mouse is racist, Hartig initially denied it. But when Gill pressed her on a Smithsonian exhibit describing the cartoon character as representing vestiges of long-standing traditions of blackface minstrelsy, she eventually conceded that the beloved mouse is rooted in minstrelsy with certain obvious racial overtones.

Politeness Equals White Supremacy

Gill then asked whether politeness is important. Hartig confirmed it was. He immediately confronted her with the fact that her organization references politeness as a defining characteristic of white supremacy culture, asking whether that made her a white supremacist.

Hartig responded with a snooty denial, as though the question were absurd rather than a logical extension of her institution’s own teachings.

When questioned about objectivity as a goal of historical scholarship, Hartig waffled about history having many goals. Gill quoted from a white supremacy document that the Smithsonian has promoted for years under her leadership, which lists objectivity as a defining characteristic of white supremacy culture.

Feigned Ignorance About Radical Toolkit

Hartig attempted to claim ignorance about the document, despite the Smithsonian having adopted and promoted the MASS Action Toolkit throughout staff development and educational materials since she assumed leadership in 2019.

The toolkit was developed by Museums as Sites for Social Action, a left-wing activist coalition dedicated to using museums as platforms for social justice, anti-racism, and equity. Funding comes from the diversity, equity, and inclusion-obsessed Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and other sources. Smithsonian staff were involved in the toolkit’s creation.

Under repeated questioning, Hartig insisted the institution did not create the toolkit before finally admitting it has been used as a reference.

Her professed surprise rings hollow. In July 2020, she faced criticism from the first Trump White House over a Smithsonian exhibit that listed the evils of whiteness as including rugged individualism, self-reliance, hard work, objectivity, the nuclear family, progress, respect for authority, and delayed gratification.

The traditional nuclear family structure of father, mother, and children was presented as another symptom of whiteness requiring dismantlement.

Institutional Capture by Marxist Ideology

The transformation of the Smithsonian offers a clear example of how communist ideology has gained institutional footholds in American civic life. The museum complex leverages its prestige and massive public funding to indoctrinate impressionable young minds with the message that America is irredeemably racist and evil, requiring complete dismantlement.

Hartig’s testimony this week demonstrated that the current leadership has no intention of restoring the institution’s traditional mission of celebrating American achievement and educating citizens about their heritage.
