Sheinbaum Blames American ‘Far Right’ for U.S.-Mexico Tensions
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum blames the American "far right" for deteriorating U.S.-Mexico relations amid DOJ indictments charging Mexican officials with aiding cartel drug trafficking.
Speaking at a press conference this week, Sheinbaum placed full responsibility on what she characterized as far-right factions in the United States for the cooling diplomatic climate between the two nations, according to Breitbart News.
The Mexican leader told reporters that she believes it is sectors of the far right in the United States who want a bad relationship with Mexico, a claim that comes amid mounting evidence of systemic corruption within Mexican government institutions.
Attacks Escalate After DOJ Indictments
Sheinbaum has intensified her veiled attacks on the United States in recent weeks, particularly following bombshell indictments issued by the Department of Justice against high-ranking Mexican officials, as Breitbart News reports.
The DOJ indicted sitting Sinaloa state Governor Ruben Rocha Moya alongside nine other top Mexican government officials on charges of aiding the Sinaloa Cartel in trafficking drugs into American communities.
U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton did not mince words following the indictment, stating that the Sinaloa Cartel would not operate as freely or successfully without corrupt politicians and law enforcement officials on their payroll. Clayton emphasized that the support of corrupt foreign officials for deadly drug trafficking must end, warning that officials around the globe who work with narco-traffickers will be brought to justice regardless of their title or position.
Billion-Dollar Tourism Investment Blocked
In a separate move that has raised eyebrows among business observers, Sheinbaum’s government recently shut down plans by Miami-based Royal Caribbean to construct a massive coastal destination for tourists in Mahahual, Quintana Roo.
The project, dubbed Perfect Day Mexico, represented a one billion dollar investment with the capacity to host 20,000 cruise passengers daily. The development would have created more than 2,000 construction jobs, 2,000 direct positions in the local economy, and indirectly supported approximately 10,000 jobs.
Sheinbaum justified the cancellation by claiming environmental concerns, saying authorities must not do anything that affects the area’s ecological balance, particularly regarding reef protection.
Royal Caribbean had also planned to build a wastewater treatment plant as part of the project that would have benefited the local Mahahual community, a detail that underscores the potential lost infrastructure improvements for Mexican citizens.
