In an exclusive interview with Breitbart News conducted in his office in Belgrade, Vucic disclosed that Trump’s favorability in Serbia reached extraordinary heights during the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election, with three-quarters of Serbians backing the American leader.

The Serbian president expressed surprise at American press coverage that highlighted other European countries as Trump strongholds, noting that Serbia clearly demonstrated the most robust support for Trump anywhere in Europe. According to Breitbart News, Vucic stated that Trump’s support in Serbia exceeded 75 percent among decided voters during the campaign period, a level not even matched in conservative American states like West Virginia, Kentucky, or Louisiana.

Serbia’s complex modern history provides important context for understanding this political phenomenon. The Balkan nation endured devastating losses in both World Wars, losing a third of its population in each conflict while fighting alongside the Allies against Nazi Germany. Later trapped behind the Iron Curtain during the Soviet era, Serbia formed part of Yugoslavia until that federation’s breakup in the late 1990s and early 2000s following the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The 1990s NATO bombing campaign against Belgrade during the Clinton administration left deep scars on Serbian-American relations. The Clinton family remains deeply unpopular in Serbia, and for three decades Serbians have viewed the United States as a power that pressured and blackmailed their small nation on various issues.

Today, Serbia seeks European Union membership but faces resistance from Brussels, with the unresolved Kosovo question casting a long shadow over the country’s future. Despite these challenges, Belgrade has emerged as a vibrant modern city where east meets west, and President Vucic, an experienced chess player who has led the nation for several years, works to position Serbia strategically for the 21st century.

Vucic sat down with Breitbart News for nearly an hour last weekend before departing for Beijing, where he became one of the first world leaders to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping following Trump’s historic state visit to China in May.

Three Key Reasons for Trump’s Serbian Appeal

The Serbian president identified three primary factors driving Trump’s extraordinary popularity in his country.

First, Serbians yearned for a fundamental reset in relations with Washington after decades of pressure, blackmail, and ultimately bombing during the Clinton years. Despite this troubled recent history, Serbians have always admired America and the American dream, and they hoped for a new chapter in bilateral relations.

Second, Trump’s courage in addressing issues from a traditional conservative perspective resonated powerfully with Serbian audiences. Vucic explained that Trump spoke openly about family values and rejected gender ideology in ways that contrasted sharply with the messaging coming from Brussels and previous Washington administrations. When Serbians are told there are genders beyond male and female, they become confused and appreciate Trump’s clear, simple messages on such matters.

Third, Trump’s emphasis on Christianity and protecting Christian values struck a deep chord in Serbia. The Serbian people, according to Vucic, greatly appreciated Trump’s commitment to the Christian world.

Peace and Prosperity

Beyond these cultural factors, Vucic noted that Serbians recognized Trump’s genuine desire to broker peace between Ukraine and Russia and to promote stability in conflict zones worldwide.

Economic considerations also played a significant role. Serbians saw opportunities to expand economic ties with the United States under Trump’s leadership, viewing him as a pragmatic and rational leader focused on economic growth, increased trade volume, and tangible results rather than ideological posturing.

This combination of cultural alignment, appreciation for strong leadership, desire for peaceful international relations, and economic pragmatism explains why Trump achieved such remarkable popularity in Serbia, transforming the country into perhaps his strongest bastion of support anywhere in the world.
