Senate Republicans Move to Block D.C. Anti-Police Laws

Senator Bill Hagerty of Tennessee led the introduction of two joint resolutions of disapproval alongside Republican colleagues Ted Budd of North Carolina, Mike Lee of Utah, Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, Pete Ricketts of Nebraska, and Rick Scott of Florida. The resolutions target the Body-Worn Camera Transparency for Use of Force Temporary Amendment Act and the Full Accountability in Arrest Reporting Temporary Amendment Act passed by the D.C. City Council.

Representative Paul Gosar of Arizona introduced companion resolutions in the House of Representatives.

The District legislation mandates that local police collect and publicly release body camera recordings along with identifying details of federal officers involved in serious use of force incidents. Republican lawmakers argue this amounts to doxxing federal personnel who are working to enforce the law and maintain public safety in the nation’s capital.

Endangering Federal Officers During Surge in Threats

Hagerty condemned the D.C. Council’s actions as a dangerous capitulation to radical activists. He stated the council has no authority to pressure federal policymakers or law enforcement to satisfy their extreme political base, adding that the measures would expose officers who have made the capital safer to harassment and retaliation.

The Tennessee senator emphasized the timing of these policies coincides with unprecedented threats against immigration enforcement personnel, noting that ICE officers are experiencing an 8,000 percent increase in death threats and a 1,300 percent surge in physical assaults.

Bipartisan Opposition to Officer Exposure

Gosar argued that federal law enforcement officers should not face the risk of having their identities exposed to criminals, extremists, or those seeking revenge simply for performing their duties. While acknowledging the importance of transparency and accountability, he insisted these principles must never compromise officer safety or investigative integrity.

Budd characterized the D.C. Council’s approach as a deliberate attempt to undermine federal law by doxxing officers for maintaining law and order. He warned that local government interference seriously jeopardizes the safety and security of federal personnel.

Lee pointed to years of crime and urban decay under D.C. Council leadership, contrasting it with recent improvements following deployment of federal law enforcement under President Trump. He accused the far-left Council of seeking to obstruct and endanger officers who are now doing the work local officials refused to accomplish.

Ricketts criticized District officials for targeting law enforcement rather than supporting efforts to make the capital safer, calling the anti-police agenda unacceptable and pledging support for officers working to maintain law and order in Washington.
