Secret Gun Cache Found Near Berlin Linked to Russian Hit Plot
German authorities are investigating a weapons cache near Berlin suspected to be linked to Russian intelligence operations, with officials believing it was intended for planned attacks.
The professionally constructed hiding place was uncovered in November 2025 following a police tip-off at a location on the outskirts of Berlin near the Brandenburg state border, according to Breitbart News. The cache contained two handguns and ammunition concealed in what investigators described as a sophisticated dead-drop location.
German security services took an unusual approach after the discovery. Rather than immediately seizing the weapons, intelligence operatives sabotaged the handguns or replaced them with non-functional replicas, then returned them to the cache with a hidden GPS tracker. The warehouse was placed under round-the-clock surveillance in hopes that the intended recipient would attempt to collect the weapons under police observation.
Months later, however, the cache remains untouched. German authorities believe their initial operation at the warehouse was too conspicuous, alerting whoever was running the dead-drop to abandon the location entirely.

Alexander Dobrindt, Germany’s Federal Interior Minister, addressed the discovery publicly on Friday. He stated the government operates under the assumption that an attack was being prepared and that a foreign power stands behind the operation. A suspect linked to the weapon cache is currently detained in Romania. German media reports indicate he may be one of two Ukrainian citizens from Russian-occupied territory who were arrested in connection with sabotage operations targeting Ukrainian-owned businesses across the European Union, allegedly directed by Russian intelligence services.

The use of weapons caches in Europe mirrors tactics employed extensively during the Cold War, when Moscow concealed explosives throughout Western nations for use by recruited sympathizers and saboteurs. The threat was deemed so severe that intelligence agencies such as Britain’s MI5 maintained extensive lists of suspected would-be saboteurs who would be immediately arrested if war appeared imminent. High-risk targets include executives of armaments factories in European nations and exiled leaders of Russian opposition political parties. Just this week, reports emerged that the head of a German defence company supplying Ukraine with drones has been in hiding under police protection for months due to a Russian intelligence plot against him.
An earlier advanced plot to kill the chief executive of Rheinmetall, Germany’s largest armaments manufacturer, was reportedly detected before it could be executed. The industrialist has since been described as the best-protected figure in Germany’s economy.
