Pro-Palestinian Man Jailed for Year in Jewish Protester Death

A California man received a one-year jail sentence for fatally striking a Jewish protester with a megaphone during clashes between pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian demonstrators in 2023.

Loay Abdel Fattah Alnaji was sentenced to one year in Ventura County Jail along with two years of felony probation for the death of Paul Kessler, according to a statement issued Wednesday by Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko, as New York Post reports.

Alnaji entered a guilty plea in May to felony involuntary manslaughter and felony battery causing serious bodily injury, court records show.

Fatal Confrontation at Dueling Rallies

The deadly incident occurred in Thousand Oaks, a city located approximately 35 miles west of Los Angeles, where opposing pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli demonstrations were taking place simultaneously.

According to prosecutors, Alnaji escalated what began as a verbal confrontation with Kessler into physical violence. During the altercation, Alnaji struck Kessler in the head with a megaphone, causing the victim to fall to the pavement where he sustained a fatal head injury.

Alnaji remained at the scene following the assault, contacted emergency services, and provided a statement to investigators. Kessler died from his injuries, and authorities arrested Alnaji several days later.

Prosecutors Sought Harsher Penalty

The District Attorney’s office argued for a state prison sentence rather than county jail time, formally objecting to the court’s decision to impose the lighter sentence of one year in jail combined with probation.

The case reflects broader concerns about violence targeting both Jewish and Arab Americans following the outbreak of renewed conflict in the Middle East after Hamas launched its attack in October 2023, prompting Israel’s subsequent military response in Gaza.

Several high-profile violent incidents have occurred since that time across the United States, highlighting the dangerous spillover of Middle Eastern tensions onto American streets.
