Poll: Nearly 4 in 10 Democrats ‘Ashamed’ to Be American
A new poll shows 38 percent of Democrats feel ashamed to be American, contrasting sharply with Republicans where 93 percent express pride ahead of the nation's 250th anniversary.
A striking new poll has revealed deep divisions in how Americans view their country, with nearly four in ten Democrats expressing shame about their nationality just weeks before the United States marks its 250th anniversary.
The survey, conducted by The Economist and YouGov and reported by Breitbart News, found that 26 percent of Democrats say they are “somewhat ashamed” to be American, while an additional 12 percent describe themselves as “very ashamed” of their nationality.
The figures among Democratic voters stand in sharp contrast to the overall population. Across all U.S. adult citizens surveyed, only 12 percent indicated they are “somewhat ashamed” and 8 percent said they are “very ashamed” to be American.
The partisan divide becomes even more pronounced when examining Republican responses. A commanding 78 percent of GOP voters reported feeling “very proud” to be American, with another 15 percent saying they are “somewhat proud.” Only 3 percent of Republicans acknowledged any sense of shame about their American identity, including just 1 percent who are “very ashamed” and 2 percent who are “somewhat ashamed.”
Among Democrats, the picture is more mixed. While 22 percent say they are “very proud” to be American and 18 percent report being “somewhat proud,” a significant 22 percent claim to feel neither pride nor shame regarding their nationality. This neutral position is shared by 20 percent of all respondents.
Despite the partisan split, Americans overall continue to express pride in their country. The survey found that 42 percent of U.S. citizens say they are “very proud” to be American, while 18 percent describe themselves as “somewhat proud.”
Only 4 percent of Republican voters indicated they are “neither proud nor ashamed” of being American.
When asked to compare America to other nations, 45 percent of Democratic respondents said the United States compares poorly. This group includes 25 percent who consider America “worse than average,” 14 percent who believe it is “among the worst,” and 6 percent who view it as “the worst” country in the world.
In the overall population, a majority of 54 percent believe America ranks favorably among nations. This includes 21 percent who view it as the greatest country in the world, 20 percent who see it as among the greatest, and 13 percent who consider it better than average.
The poll was conducted between June 13 and 15 with 1,549 respondents and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
