Poll: 55% of Democrats Would Rather Live Outside U.S.
A new poll shows 55 percent of Democrats would prefer to live in another country, compared to 38 percent of independents and 10 percent of Republicans.
The Elon University/YouGov America 250 National Survey, conducted between April 30 and May 4, posed a straightforward question to respondents: whether there was any other country on Earth they would rather live in than the United States today. According to Breitbart News, a full 55 percent of Democrats answered yes.
By contrast, only 38 percent of Independents expressed a desire to relocate, while a mere 10 percent of Republicans said the same. The survey polled 1,000 U.S. adults with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.95 percent through an online platform.
The findings align with a broader trend among Democratic voters toward embracing socialism over free-market capitalism. A 2025 poll found that a majority of Democrat voters now favor socialism and support far-left candidates, as Breitbart News reported in September.
The outlet noted at the time that socialism remains deeply unpopular among Republicans and many independents, which explains why far-left Democrats have gained ground in cities like New York but continue to struggle in red and battleground states. Meanwhile, a plurality of independent and Republican voters maintain their preference for capitalism.
Months later, another survey confirmed that a majority of Democrats held favorable views of socialism. That polling came as New York City elected Mayor Zohran Mamdani, an openly socialist Muslim politician, marking a significant shift in the city’s political landscape.
President Donald Trump responded sharply to these electoral results, declaring that Americans now face a stark choice. After last night’s results, the decision facing all Americans could not be more clear. We have a choice between communism and common sense, he stated.
From Marxism to Warning Bell
In 2013, former Marxist-turned-conservative thinker David Horowitz delivered a speech at the Heritage Foundation in which he drew on his own family history to explain the left’s long-term strategy. Horowitz, whose parents were communists who called themselves progressives, explained that their agenda had always been a Soviet-style America.
He recalled that the slogan of the communist party during his youth was peace, jobs, and democracy—rhetoric that should sound familiar to modern observers, as Breitbart News noted.
Horowitz went further, arguing that the communist party had effectively become the Democratic Party. He compared the left to the wealthy characters in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby who break things and leave others to clean up the mess. The former radical Marxist also argued that today’s left had learned stealth from the failures of the 1960s, adopting the guise of Jeffersonian democrats rather than openly declaring their revolutionary aims.
Political Winds Shifting Ahead of Midterms
American voters appear to be turning away from Democrats as critical midterm elections approach. A recent CNN poll showed Democrats losing ground, according to Breitbart News.
In April, Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio distilled the Republican pitch for the midterms into simple terms. The choice facing voters, he argued, comes down to two sentences: They’re crazy. We’re not. Jordan emphasized that Republicans must make this contrast clear to the American people.
