Representative Adam Smith of Washington, the ranking Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, made the allegations during an appearance on CNN, as Breitbart News reports. Smith claimed his office has been forced to rely on informal channels and secondhand accounts to gather intelligence about battlefield conditions affecting U.S. forces.
When pressed by host Erin Burnett about whether he had full knowledge of American injuries and equipment losses, Smith acknowledged significant gaps in his committee’s information. He stated that the Pentagon has failed to maintain transparency regarding attacks on U.S. positions and resulting casualties.
Smith described a troubling pattern in which his office learns of incidents through personal contacts rather than official briefings. He cited examples of receiving reports from individuals with connections to service members stationed at bases in Jordan or Iraq, who relay information about attacks involving dozens of wounded personnel that the Pentagon does not publicly acknowledge.
Congressional Oversight Circumvented
The Washington Democrat characterized the situation as unprecedented, arguing that the administration has treated military operations as a personal matter rather than one requiring accountability to Congress and the American people. He went so far as to describe the current executive approach as dictatorial in nature.
Burnett highlighted the striking irregularity of the situation, noting that Smith, as the top Democrat on the Armed Services Committee, should not need to depend on informal networks for information about critical matters such as the loss of missile defense systems protecting American bases and regional allies, or the number of U.S. troops sustaining injuries.
Smith confirmed that his staff maintains constant contact with Pentagon personnel in an attempt to extract information, but emphasized that transparency remains severely lacking. He indicated that his committee must piece together intelligence from various sources rather than receiving comprehensive official briefings.
Public Opposition to Military Operations
