Pelosi Calls Obama’s Iran Nuclear Deal ‘Masterpiece of Diplomacy’

During an appearance on MS NOW’s “The Briefing” program Wednesday, Representative Nancy Pelosi of California defended the previous administration’s nuclear agreement and attacked Trump’s understanding of Iran policy.
Host Jen Psaki questioned why President Trump remains focused on his predecessor, referencing a recent press conference where Trump mentioned former President Barack Obama. Psaki characterized the event as chaotic and suggested Trump lacked comprehension of the Iran nuclear deal’s contents.
The California Democrat attributed Trump’s continued focus on Obama to his own policy shortcomings. She described Obama’s nuclear agreement with Iran as a masterpiece of diplomacy, emphasizing the international coalition assembled to negotiate the deal.
Pelosi highlighted the involvement of the European Union, G20 nations, Russia, and China in the original agreement. She stressed that the accord underwent rigorous scrutiny and review by multiple countries before implementation, which she characterized as successful.
The former Speaker condemned Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Obama-era deal, noting that even Republicans now acknowledge his Iran strategy as unsuccessful. She cited what she described as excessive concessions in current negotiations, including 300 billion dollars for reconstruction, sanctions relief on oil sales, and unfreezing of Iranian bank assets.
Pelosi argued that Trump’s approach represents a significant giveaway to Iran without addressing key concerns. She pointed out that critics of the Obama nuclear agreement often cited its failure to address ballistic missiles, a shortcoming she claims persists in Trump’s current negotiations.
