Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire confirmed the decision on Friday, May 29, stating it was made to allow appropriate respect for the national commemoration marking a decade since the jihadist massacre on the Promenade des Anglais, according to Valeurs Actuelles. The fireworks will now be launched from the Champ-de-Mars esplanade on the evening of July 13, though the traditional military parade will proceed as scheduled on July 14 itself.

The move comes after coordination with French President Emmanuel Macron, who is expected to travel to Nice for the memorial events. Grégoire explained that the adjustment would enable the nation to observe the solemn anniversary without the distraction of celebratory festivities competing for attention on the same day.

Recognition From Nice Leadership

Nice Mayor Éric Ciotti of the UDR party praised the decision on social media, calling it a gesture of respect and memory that honors the victims, their families, and all citizens of Nice who remain deeply marked by the tragedy. The city of Nice has planned an extensive series of commemorative events including a large memorial march and a ceremony at Villa Masséna.

The remembrance program will also feature a drone display, the illumination of 86 light beams representing each victim, and a cultural event focused on the resilience of the women, men, and children affected by the attack. These memorial activities will allow the nation to collectively pause and reflect before transitioning to traditional Bastille Day celebrations.

Other Cities Follow Paris Lead

Several other cities in southern France have made similar scheduling changes to their July 14 fireworks displays. Saint-Laurent-du-Var and Cannes are among the municipalities that have opted to reschedule their pyrotechnic shows out of respect for the anniversary.

Cannes Mayor David Lisnard of the NE party emphasized the importance of the decision, stating that the duty of remembrance is neither a ritual nor a slogan but rather a republican requirement. He stressed that remembering, naming the victims, and observing moments of reflection represents a refusal to forget and a determination not to let fear dictate the terms of public life.

The coordinated response from Paris and these southern French cities demonstrates a unified national commitment to honoring those who fell victim to Islamic terrorism while maintaining the traditions of French national celebration in an appropriately respectful manner.
