Over One Million Gather in Madrid for Pope Leo XIV Mass

Spanish organizers prepared sixteen flower carpets along the half-kilometer procession route, utilizing more than 30,000 flowers arranged by a florists association from Galicia. Following the Mass, Pope Leo XIV carried a gilded monstrance containing the Eucharistic host over the flower carpets as children scattered additional petals before him and spectators tossed petals from behind security barricades. The tradition of creating and then trampling elaborate floral displays dates back two centuries and represents an offering to the Eucharist.

The remarkable turnout began Saturday evening when an estimated 600,000 young Spaniards attended a vigil service where they knelt in prolonged silent prayer alongside the pontiff. The papal visit to Spain runs through June 12 and includes meetings with Spanish royals, government officials, and church leaders. A highlight of the itinerary features the inauguration of the recently completed Tower of Jesus Christ spire at the Basílica de la Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of architect Antoni Gaudí.
