NFL Silent on Pride Month as Social Media Goes Dark

The NFL declined to mark Pride Month on social media for the second consecutive year while nine teams remained silent, though the league issued a written statement affirming LGBTQ support.

According to Breitbart News, the league’s social media accounts made no mention of June 1 as the beginning of Pride Month, mirroring the approach taken in 2023 when the NFL last publicly acknowledged the observance through its “Football is for everyone” campaign.

While the league’s central accounts remained silent, the NFL issued a written statement to media outlets affirming its continued backing of the LGBTQ community and related programming.

The statement pledged that Pride Month would be recognized throughout June and promised the league would continue to highlight Pride-related content, community initiatives, and celebrations across its franchises. The NFL indicated it would showcase work by the league, clubs, players, partners, and community organizations supporting LGBTQ communities throughout the month.

The league’s reticence stands in contrast to many of its member teams, though participation remains far from universal. Last year, 12 NFL teams chose not to acknowledge Pride Month as June began.

This year, nine franchises have so far refrained from posting celebratory messages for Pride Month. The silent teams include the New York Jets, Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, Tennessee Titans, Kansas City Chiefs, Las Vegas Raiders, Dallas Cowboys, and the New Orleans Saints.

The NFL’s approach reflects an increasingly cautious stance on social and cultural messaging as America’s most popular professional sports league navigates divided public opinion on Pride Month observances and related activism.
