Newsom Challenges Trump With Aggressive Letter in Desperate Pivot
California Governor Gavin Newsom accused the Justice Department of selective prosecution while demanding investigations into alleged Trump administration corruption amid a federal probe into him and his wife.
In a letter released Tuesday evening and addressed to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Newsom demanded to know whether the DOJ has opened investigations into what he termed ethical violations involving President Trump and his allies, according to New York Post.
“The United States Department of Justice selectively leaked uncorroborated details about ongoing investigative matters involving the Governor and First Partner, so it should not be a problem for you to confirm whether US DOJ has opened any investigations into the instances of apparent public corruption detailed above involving the President and his allies,” Newsom wrote in the letter.
The Democratic governor, who is reportedly considering a 2028 presidential bid, characterized the federal probe into him and his wife as a politically motivated attack rather than a legitimate law enforcement action.
Newsom Claims ‘Fishing Expedition’ Against Him
Newsom pulled no punches in his criticism of federal investigators, suggesting the investigation lacks substance and is instead driven by political animus.
Calling this investigation a fishing expedition is actually too generous, Newsom stated in the letter, as reported by New York Post. He argued that if the DOJ were genuinely committed to combating corruption, it would redirect its resources away from him and toward what he characterized as ethical concerns surrounding the administration.
The governor’s letter listed multiple allegations he believes merit federal scrutiny, including reported financial gains by the Trump family from cryptocurrency ventures and deals involving Trump Media & Technology Group.
Trump Campaign Denies Connection Between Business Deals
The Trump campaign has maintained that the cryptocurrency investments and technology deals involving Trump Media & Technology Group are separate matters with no connection between them, New York Post reports.
No formal investigations have been publicly announced regarding the claims Newsom raised, which have primarily appeared in media coverage rather than official DOJ statements.
Newsom challenged the Justice Department’s priorities in his letter, writing that DOJ policy prohibiting prosecution of a sitting president should not prevent investigations into alleged corruption involving the president’s family members and associates.
Second Letter to Trump Administration
This marks Newsom’s second correspondence with the Trump administration on the matter. His first letter was a Freedom of Information Act request seeking any communications mentioning his name, his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom, or simply “Gavin” among senior DOJ officials.
That request specifically targeted communications involving former Attorney General Pam Bondi, who was dismissed by Trump, along with other top Justice Department leadership.
Newsom made his allegations public through a video statement Monday in which he claimed the administration was targeting him, his family, and his associates for political reasons.
No Response From White House or DOJ
Neither the White House nor the Department of Justice has issued official comments addressing Newsom’s accusations or confirming details about any investigation.
Acting Attorney General Blanche, to whom the letter was addressed, has not publicly commented on the matter.
The confrontation represents an escalation in tensions between California’s Democratic leadership and the Republican administration, with Newsom positioning himself as a prominent Trump critic even as he faces federal scrutiny.
