A Mexican tax official resigned after photos showed him in expensive NBA Finals seats near President Trump, raising questions about how he could afford such luxury on his government salary.
Héctor Contreras Mercader stepped down Thursday from his position as director of the state’s Tax Administration Service following intense scrutiny over his attendance at Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden, according to New York Post.
Images captured by photographers showed Contreras wearing a Jalen Brunson jersey alongside his son in a Karl-Anthony Towns jersey seated in section 107, row 22, with President Trump visible in the background during Monday night’s national anthem. Another photograph showed the official with his hands over his forehead as Trump sat nearby with Knicks owner James Dolan in a luxury suite.
The photographs rapidly circulated across Mexican social media, prompting serious questions about how a public servant earning approximately $3,700 monthly could access seats valued at tens of thousands of dollars. Courtside and lower-bowl tickets for the game were reportedly selling for as much as $100,000 on resale platforms, as New York Post reports.
Sharp Contrast With Local Wages
The controversy carries particular weight in Quintana Roo, home to the popular resort destination Cancun, where the average worker earns roughly $18 per day or $550 monthly. A ticket located just 14 rows ahead of Contreras’ position was listed at $86,343 on a resale site on June 6. For Game 4, seats in the same row were listed at $9,451, though Contreras’ attendance at that game could not be confirmed.
Resignation Amid Growing Questions
Faced with mounting public criticism, Contreras announced his departure Thursday, claiming his New York trip constituted a strictly personal matter. He stated that his decision aimed to prevent interference with proper government functioning and avoid distracting from institutional responsibilities.
Governor Mara Lezama of Quintana Roo did not respond to requests for comment on the resignation.

Mexican citizens expressed skepticism and anger on social media platform X. One user noted that Trump had inadvertently exposed officials who publicly champion austerity while living lavishly abroad. Another commenter suggested Contreras chose resignation to halt further investigation into potential corruption, urging continued scrutiny of Quintana Roo’s government finances.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about public corruption and the disparity between government officials’ declared income and their apparent lifestyle, particularly in states managing significant tourism revenue.
