Meloni and Trump Share Moment: “We Are Friends” as They Stand Firm Against Moscow
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and US President Donald Trump publicly reconciled at the G7 summit in France after eight months without contact, pledging to prioritize Western unity amid international crises.
The thaw between the two leaders came after more than eight months without face-to-face contact, their last meeting having occurred at the Gaza peace summit in Sharm el-Sheikh on October 13 of the previous year. Media center footage from the French Alpine summit captured a telling moment when European Council President Antonio Costa remarked to the pair, “You are friends again.”
Meloni responded immediately: We’ve always been friends. Trump replied with characteristic humor: “I was abandoned.” The Italian premier quickly countered: “No, you are not.”
The exchange, witnessed also by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, marked the culmination of what Italian diplomatic sources described as a “clarifying meeting” between the two leaders. The conversations, which began at Monday evening’s restricted dinner for heads of state and continued through Tuesday’s sessions, addressed what had been a notably uneven relationship in recent months.
Sources from Palazzo Chigi confirmed that Meloni emphasized to Trump the importance of Western unity during this period of major international crises. Both leaders, as Il Giornale reports, agreed that unity must be the overriding priority at this stage, a principle on which the Italian prime minister has consistently insisted and genuinely believes.
The reconciliation occurred against the backdrop of a noticeably more measured Trump at Evian, with the American president adopting a less confrontational tone than is typical of his diplomatic engagements. On Ukraine, Trump not only pledged continued support for Kyiv during the dedicated session attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but also urged Moscow to reach an agreement to end the war.
Hard Line Against Territorial Concessions
Meloni took a firm stance during the Ukraine working session, according to Italian diplomatic sources. The prime minister argued forcefully against making territorial concessions to Russia in any negotiation for areas Moscow has failed to capture militarily.
Her position rested on the assessment that the ground situation differs sharply from Russian narratives. The front has remained essentially frozen, with Russia having conquered less than 1.5 percent of Ukrainian territory from December 2022 to the present, despite massive losses. In 2026, the Russian advance actually halted entirely.
While engagement in peace negotiations remains crucial, Meloni insisted, this does not legitimize territorial concessions. Italy brought to the G7 table an outright rejection of any attempt to redraw borders through force.
Bilateral Meetings on Regional Stability
Beyond the Trump rapprochement, Meloni held two bilateral meetings on the summit margins. She met first with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, then with United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan.
The discussion with the Emirati leader centered on regional developments following the memorandum of understanding signed between Iran and the United States. Both leaders agreed on the necessity of supporting international efforts to ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
The renewed Meloni-Trump working relationship comes as the West faces mounting challenges from adversarial powers and questions about transatlantic cohesion. The Evian summit demonstrated that personal chemistry between allied leaders remains a vital component of strategic coordination, particularly when Washington and European capitals must present a united front on Ukraine, Middle Eastern security, and broader questions of the international order.
