Despite warm exchanges and smiles at the G7 summit in Evian, Trump has unleashed a barrage of criticism against the conservative Italian leader, dismissing her with the comment that she was begging for photographs with him at the gathering and that he now feels pity for her.
The deterioration in relations centers on disagreements over Middle Eastern policy and Iran. The first rupture occurred in March over the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, when Washington requested greater allied involvement in regional security but Rome maintained a cautious and multilateral stance.
A more serious breach followed weeks later when Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto denied American forces use of the Sigonella air base near Catania. The incident proved particularly contentious because American officials had not requested authorization or consulted Italian military leadership in advance. Instead, the plan was communicated while American bombers were already airborne, as reported by Il Giornale.
Upon investigation, Italian authorities determined the aircraft were not engaged in routine or logistical operations covered under existing bilateral treaties with the United States.
Washington responded with harsh public statements directed at Europe and Italy. The Italian government fired back, describing the American rhetoric as using tones not coordinated through proper diplomatic channels. Rome emphasized that Italy remains committed to international security but insists all decisions must operate within NATO and multilateral frameworks.
The confrontation intensified when Trump gave an interview to Corriere della Sera in which he attacked Pope Francis as weak. Meloni called the papal criticism unacceptable, prompting Trump to turn his fire on the Italian premier herself. The American president accused Meloni of not caring whether Iran obtains nuclear weapons, claiming the regime could destroy Italy in minutes if given the chance. Trump further charged that the Italian leader lacks courage.
