Martel: China Winning AI Race Means Exporting Global Repression

A Breitbart journalist warned that Chinese dominance in artificial intelligence would spread repressive surveillance technology globally through initiatives like Belt and Road.

Frances Martel, International Editor at Breitbart News, delivered the stark assessment during Sunday’s Breitbart Founders’ Roundtable, titled “The Invisible War – AI, China, and the Battle for Global Control,” according to Breitbart News.

The expert discussion brought together China specialists including senior contributor Peter Schweizer and artificial intelligence expert Wynton Hall, who also serves as social media director at the outlet. Alex Marlow, Editor-in-Chief, moderated the session.

Martel outlined a grim scenario in which Chinese dominance in AI development would extend far beyond the regime’s borders, mirroring the export pattern already established with existing surveillance technologies.

Inside China itself, she warned, an AI-powered totalitarian system could deploy automated judges to execute citizens for dissident thinking. But the threat would not remain contained within Chinese territory.

Drawing on existing examples, Martel pointed to how Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative has already seeded repressive technologies throughout developing nations. Huawei facial recognition systems, biometric fingerprint databases, and advanced surveillance cameras have been deployed in Venezuela—a nation where citizens were reduced to eating garbage between 2017 and 2021 due to economic collapse—as well as Ecuador and other countries.

Wherever demand existed for repressive technology, China shared it, Martel noted, establishing a pattern that would only intensify with AI supremacy.

She cautioned that Americans who might consider simply fleeing the country would find no escape. Chinese AI surveillance systems would follow to Peru, Nigeria, and nations across the globe if Beijing wins the technology race, particularly if U.S. leadership fails to recognize the stakes.

The Founders’ Roundtable series is held exclusively for “Middleweight” and higher-tier members of the Breitbart Fight Club, offering subscribers direct engagement with experts, political figures, and administration officials.

Previous roundtable events have featured EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, and Senator Marsha Blackburn.

Participants in Sunday’s session expressed strong appreciation for the discussion. One Fight Club member from England praised the event as critical to understanding global politics.
