Mai Vang Rejects Pledge: Unfit for Congress

California congressional candidate Mai Vang has repeatedly turned her back during the Pledge of Allegiance, raising questions about her fitness for federal office according to reporting.

The Sacramento City Council member is seeking California’s 7th Congressional District seat in the June 2 ballot as a self-identified progressive advocate. Her deliberate rejection of the Pledge of Allegiance—performed multiple times in public settings—reflects a troubling pattern that warrants scrutiny from voters considering her candidacy.

In a February 2025 Facebook post, Vang attempted to justify her conduct: “I use that moment to ground myself — to center our communities and remind myself of the injustices.” This explanation reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of what the Pledge represents. Reciting it, hand over heart, does not constitute blanket approval of every government action. Rather, it signifies allegiance to the nation itself, respect for the constitutional principles of liberty upon which America was founded, and recognition of the land of opportunity this country provides.

While dissent and debate remain essential to democratic function, there exists a meaningful distinction between rational criticism and theatrical rejection of patriotic rituals. What Vang has demonstrated amounts to repeated symbolic contempt—behavior more aligned with performative activism than serious governance.

A Radical Platform Confirms Deeper Concerns

Beyond her controversial stance on the Pledge, Vang‘s policy agenda reveals ideological commitments fundamentally at odds with American founding principles. Her congressional platform includes calls to abolish and prosecute ICE, implement radical gender ideology through government mandate, defund law enforcement, and commit indefinite public resources to expansive social programs.

As a councilwoman, Vang has consistently pushed to shrink Sacramento’s police force while claiming—without evidence—that reduced law enforcement improves public safety. Her stated congressional agenda reads as a collection of far-left demands: prosecution of immigration authorities, “gender-affirming care” mandates, adherence to progressive climate doctrine, and unlimited taxpayer-funded services.

Effective leadership demands pragmatism, constitutional respect, and genuine concern for national stability. Those unwilling to demonstrate basic patriotic respect have no legitimate claim to positions of national power.
