Macron made the acknowledgment while speaking with Ukrainian President Volodyr Zelensky ahead of a group session focused on Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, according to New York Post. The French leader admitted the previous evening’s discussion with Trump had been difficult, signaling the strained dynamics that have characterized relations between the American president and several European counterparts.
The friction reflects broader frustrations among European leaders over Trump’s approach to multiple international flashpoints, including his stance on the Iran conflict, his repeated suggestions about acquiring Greenland, and his critiques of both Zelensky and Ukraine’s war effort.
Hot Mic Captures Strategic Discussions
A hot microphone captured Macron and Zelensky discussing how to navigate their interactions with Trump as they walked the grounds of the Hotel Royal on the shores of Lake Geneva. Speaking in English, the French president urged the Ukrainian leader to extend his stay at the summit, though Zelensky cited obligations in Brussels later in the week.
Macron pressed Zelensky on whether he had arranged a face-to-face meeting with Trump. The Ukrainian president acknowledged he had not, noting he had requested such a meeting during a Sunday phone call in which he wished Trump a happy 80th birthday. Macron responded by pledging to arrange the encounter himself, as New York Post reports.
Trump Arrives Late, Eventually Engages Zelensky
Trump arrived 50 minutes late to Tuesday morning’s group meeting on Ukraine and initially avoided direct contact with Zelensky, who received warm greetings from other G7 leaders. However, the two leaders engaged in an extended conversation once the session concluded. Zelensky posted photographs to social media showing the pair seated opposite one another in what appeared to be focused dialogue.
The American president later confirmed to reporters he would be meeting with Zelensky later that day, suggesting Macron’s diplomatic intervention had achieved its intended result.
European Leaders Push for Stronger U.S. Commitment
During the Ukraine-focused session, European leaders reportedly emphasized that Russian President Vladimir Putin now occupies a weaker strategic position in the war and urged Trump to increase American support for Kyiv. Zelensky outlined his priorities on social media, emphasizing air defense missiles, production licenses, winter support packages, and increased pressure on Russia.
The Ukrainian president noted that the United States appeared ready to provide backing across these areas. He also revealed he had suggested during Sunday’s call that Trump host a trilateral meeting with Putin, potentially on American soil where the Russian leader would find it harder to decline.
Just before the G7 summit began, Russia launched a massive missile attack on Ukraine’s largest cities, killing at least 11 people in the barrage.
