Lib Dems Must Act Over Anti-Christian Bias, Ex-Leader Says
The Liberal Democrats face pressure to address anti-Christian discrimination after admitting unlawful treatment of a candidate and agreeing to pay damages in a case breaking party silence.
According to GB News, Tim Farron has publicly called on his party to take concrete steps to prevent future incidents following its admission of wrongdoing against David Campanale, a prospective parliamentary candidate who was forced out after facing mockery and abuse over his Christian faith.
The Liberal Democrats admitted earlier this year to unlawfully discriminating against Campanale and agreed to pay damages. The case is set to return to court tomorrow to determine the full extent of compensation owed to the former candidate.
Farron, who himself faced intense scrutiny over his Christian beliefs during his time as party leader, told The Telegraph that while he had generally found the Liberal Democrats to be welcoming to people of all faiths, the party clearly failed in this instance.
In this particular case, it is clear that the party did not get this right, Farron stated, adding that the party must now take steps to ensure such discrimination never occurs again against anyone of any protected characteristic, including Christians.
His intervention marks the first time any sitting Liberal Democrat MP has spoken publicly about the case, breaking what had been a wall of silence from the parliamentary party on the matter.
Campanale was selected as a prospective parliamentary candidate in December 2021, as GB News reports, but almost immediately became the target of what the local party chair described as a concerted and organized campaign to remove him.
At least six complaints were filed against Campanale in what he claims was a campaign motivated primarily by animosity toward his Christian beliefs. The atmosphere surrounding the complaints was described as febrile by party officials.
The party initially denied any wrongdoing before backtracking and admitting to the unlawful discrimination claims.
The case has raised serious questions about tolerance for religious believers within Britain’s liberal political establishment and whether professing traditional Christian views has become incompatible with holding office in certain political parties.
