Representative Mike Lawler, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Middle East Subcommittee, announced his intention to pursue a full congressional probe into Dr. Adam Hisham Hamawy should the New Jersey Democrat win his general election race in November, according to New York Post.

Hamawy secured the Democratic nomination Tuesday for New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District, a seat considered safely Democratic following the retirement of Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman.

Pattern of Troubling Associations

The Egypt-born combat surgeon’s past includes serving as a translator and voluntary defense witness for Omar Abdel-Rahman, the notorious terrorist known as the “Blind Sheikh” who was convicted on terrorism and conspiracy charges in the mid-1990s following the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

Court transcripts reveal Hamawy accompanied Abdel-Rahman on a road trip to a Detroit conference where the terrorist leader allegedly discussed conquering America. Hamawy later testified on behalf of the Blind Sheikh, claiming such remarks were misunderstood, as New York Post reports.

In 1994, Hamawy volunteered briefly with Benevolence International Foundation in Bosnia. Years later, the 9/11 Commission Report identified that organization as part of a covert network that provided financial and operational support for terrorist activities under Osama bin Laden’s direction during the 1990s.

Gaza Hospital Claims Contradicted

More recently, Hamawy worked at a hospital in the Gaza Strip in 2024 and publicly vouched for its innocuous nature. He told Jacobin Magazine in August 2024 that during his three-week stay at the European Hospital, he witnessed no weapons or military infrastructure.

Israeli forces subsequently uncovered an extensive Hamas tunnel network beneath that same hospital. The tunnels served as a hideout for senior Hamas commanders, including Mohammed Sinwar, brother of Yahya Sinwar, who led Hamas during the October 7, 2023 terrorist attacks against Israel. Israeli forces eliminated Mohammed Sinwar in those tunnels.

Anti-Israel Platform

Throughout his primary campaign, Hamawy actively opposed the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and called for ending U.S. military assistance to Israel. He compared such aid to arming a bully and suggested Israelis need to experience war’s consequences to change their behavior.

Hamawy supports pending legislation to block offensive weapons transfers to Israel. Representative Delia Ramirez, who has endorsed Hamawy, considers support for that bill a litmus test for candidates she backs.

Despite his controversial associations, Hamawy served as a surgeon during the Iraq War and received military honors. Senator Tammy Duckworth has credited him with saving her life after her helicopter was shot down.

Lawler emphasized that while no evidence suggests Hamawy committed crimes, his repeated proximity to terrorist figures and organizations demands scrutiny. The congressman pledged that if Hamawy wins in November, he will use his subcommittee authority to demand answers about these connections.

The Hamawy campaign has not responded to requests for comment.
