Komotini: Consulate’s Religious Branch Receives Aykut Ünal’s Blessings

The Turkish Consul in Komotini flagrantly breaches diplomatic norms by endorsing a contentious religious council tied to Ankara, revealing a troubling mix of politics disguised as faith leadership.

From the Ballot Box to the Consulate in Komotini – The New Administration of Religious Officials Received the “Anointment”

In a move that offends public sentiment and violates every principle of diplomatic law, the Turkish Consul in Komotini, Aykut Ünal, rushed to grant official “status” to a para-religious structure functioning as an extension of Ankara in Thrace.

This is a purely anti-diplomatic action, as a foreign diplomat directly intervenes in the internal affairs of the Muslim minority, supporting an entity that challenges the official institutions of the Greek state.

The path from the sham ballot box to the official offices proved remarkably short for the new administration of the Association of Religious Officials of Western Thrace Mosques.

After the elections held on April 22 at the headquarters of the illegally operating Turkish Youth of Komotini (GTGB) — where the pro-consulate Erol Yoluç emerged first with 88 votes — the new body hurried to complete the cycle of “necessary” meetings.

Yesterday, Thursday, April 30, the delegation of religious officials crossed the threshold of the Turkish Consulate in Komotini, where they were received by Consul Aykut Ünal.

The visit was sealed with the customary post on the Consulate’s social media, officially “blessing” the new leadership for their term.

Soon after, the delegation visited İbrahim Şerif at his office. There, in an atmosphere of full alignment, views were exchanged regarding the future activities of the association, with the head of the pseudo-muftiate wishing “strength” for the new administration’s duties, which — as all evidence suggests — remain closely linked to Ankara’s agenda in the region.

The New Composition of the Board of Directors

  • President: Erol YOLUÇ (88 votes)

  • Vice President: Mesut PAŞALI İSMAİL (79 votes)

  • General Secretary: Ahmet ARİF EMİN (72 votes)

  • Treasurer: Ahmet OSMAN (56 votes)

  • Members: Abdurrahim Kuru, Enes Keke Hasan, Mustafa Mustafa.

We have seen this play before, and the staging remains unchanged. A fast-track election process in a controlled space (GTGB), a ballot box that produces the “chosen ones,” and immediately afterwards the obligatory visits of deference to the Consulate and the Pseudo-muftiate. Mr. Yoluç and his team wasted no time: barely had the ink dried on the election records when they rushed to present their credentials. When the role of a religious association is limited to ceremonial handshakes and photos with the Consul, the identity of “religious official” yields to that of “executive body” serving a specific agenda.

The support by the Turkish Consul for this para-religious structure is not simply a “ceremonial” gesture; it is a blatant violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. It is inconceivable that a diplomatic representative acts as a “party boss” and “spiritual guide” of an association elected in illegal premises (GTGB) that opposes the rule of law.

When diplomacy becomes a tool for enforcing a para-religious agenda, it ceases to serve the friendship of peoples and becomes an instrument of propaganda. Mr. Ünal, with the “blessing” he bestowed on Mr. Yoluç, once again demonstrated that the Consulate is not concerned with the religious faith of Muslims, but with the absolute control of their consciences through “disciplined” executive bodies.
