Kamala Surrogate Lizzo’s New Album Sells Under 3,000 Copies
Pop singer Lizzo's latest album sold fewer than 3,000 copies in its first week and failed to chart on the Billboard 200, a dramatic fall from her 2022 release that debuted at number two.
According to Breitbart News, the album titled “Bitch” moved just 2,649 units during its debut week after dropping on June 5. The left-wing entertainer, who served as a surrogate for Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential campaign, saw sales crater even further in week two, tumbling to only 650 copies while streaming numbers fell to below 900,000.
The disastrous performance stands in stark contrast to her 2022 release “Special,” which opened with 39,000 copies sold and 69,000 equivalent album units, securing a number two position on the Billboard 200. This time around, “Bitch” failed to appear on the chart at all.
Industry insiders are pointing to fundamental weaknesses in Lizzo’s appeal. A former senior label executive told Rolling Stone that the singer never cultivated a dedicated following, instead relying on radio play and viral moments to drive her visibility.
She was a very song-driven, radio-hits-driven artist who lacked a core fanbase, the executive explained, adding that loyal supporters are essential for sustained success in today’s music landscape.
Lizzo rose to prominence in 2019 with hits including “Juice,” “About Damn Time,” and “Good as Hell,” earning multiple Grammy Awards and selling out arena tours. But her commercial dominance appears to have evaporated.
The performer herself has attempted to explain the collapse on social media, claiming that shifts in the music industry and what she described as a very obvious and public attack on her career have damaged her prospects. She argued that streaming services have replaced radio as the primary discovery mechanism, disadvantaging artists who built their audience through traditional airplay.
Beyond music, Lizzo has repeatedly injected herself into political controversies. Last summer she delivered an anti-ICE tirade in which she bizarrely claimed no one actually owns land on Earth, before contradicting herself by asserting that American territory rightfully belongs to Mexicans.
She also took aim at rapper Nicki Minaj late last year, accusing the superstar of aligning with President Donald Trump for financial gain and predicting that other celebrities would follow for profit.
During an appearance on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, Lizzo wore a crop top emblazoned with the word “TARIFFIED” in a jab at the president’s trade policies.
The album’s failure raises questions about whether overtly political performers can maintain mainstream commercial appeal, particularly when their activism alienates large segments of potential listeners.
