Jeffries Taps AOC for Health Care in New Affordability Plan
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries created five Democrat working groups on affordability issues, with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sarah McBride leading healthcare and caregiving policy teams.
The Democrat leader’s new initiative divides economic policy into five working groups covering housing, gas and utilities, groceries and goods, caregiving, and healthcare, as Breitbart News reports.
Sarah Ferris, a Capitol Hill reporter with CNN, posted documentation on X revealing the composition of these groups. The housing working group will be led by Reps. Laura Friedman of California and Emilia Sykes of Ohio.
Reps. Nikki Budzinski of Illinois and Mike Levin of California received assignments to the gas and utilities group, while Reps. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, Hillary Scholten of Michigan, and Jill Tokuda of Hawaii will oversee the groceries and goods working group.
The caregiving group falls under the direction of McBride and Rep. Morgan McGarvey of Kentucky. McBride, a biological male who identifies as transgender, represents Delaware in Congress.
Ocasio-Cortez, the democratic socialist representative from New York, will lead the healthcare group alongside Rep. Terri Sewell of Alabama.
Andrew Solender, who covers Congress for Axios, shared a letter from Jeffries explaining the rationale behind the working groups. In the letter, Jeffries declared that America is too expensive.
The Democrat leader claimed that too many working Americans struggle to make ends meet despite living in what he described as the wealthiest nation in world history.
Jeffries directed his criticism toward President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans, accusing them of failing to deliver on promises to reduce costs for American families.
He blamed what he termed the Trump Tariffs, healthcare policy changes, and military operations in Iran for increased expenses facing ordinary citizens. Jeffries accused Republicans of showing indifference to the financial pressures confronting the American people.
The announcement signals an attempt by House Democrats to position themselves on economic issues ahead of the next election cycle, though the selection of far-left figures like Ocasio-Cortez and controversial lawmakers like McBride to lead key policy areas may raise questions about the party’s direction.
