Iran Scrambles With Diplomacy After Conflicting Claims on U.S. Talks
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held multiple diplomatic calls Tuesday after conflicting reports emerged about whether Tehran had halted indirect nuclear talks with Washington.
According to Breitbart News, the Tasnim News Agency, which maintains close ties to the terrorist Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), reported Monday that Iran had ceased responding to American messages in indirect talks facilitated by Pakistan. However, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) subsequently published a contradictory account in which Araghchi denied such claims, dismissing any reports not directly confirmed by him as mere speculation.
The alleged breakdown in communications stems from Iranian military grievances over Israel’s ongoing military operations in Lebanon, where Israeli forces are combating the Iranian-backed terrorist group Hezbollah. The terrorist organization initiated a barrage of missile strikes against Israeli territory in March, following the launch of Operation Epic Fury, a U.S. military campaign designed to diminish Iran’s capacity for terrorism. Israel responded with a comprehensive invasion of southern Lebanon, displacing more than one million civilians.
Operation Epic Fury has eliminated dozens of high-ranking Iranian officials, including supreme leader Ali Khamenei, whose primary function was mediating between the IRGC and civilian government officials. His death, combined with the extended absence of purported successor Mojtaba Khamenei, has created a leadership vacuum that has plagued Iranian messaging and diplomatic coherence throughout ongoing peace efforts. President Donald Trump has publicly expressed frustration with negotiating with Tehran due to the lack of clarity in their positions. In April, he cancelled face-to-face talks with Iran, stating there exists tremendous infighting and confusion within their leadership.
Despite these challenges, Araghchi has positioned himself as the primary Iranian representative in efforts to secure a peace agreement with the United States. Tasnim News reported Tuesday that the foreign minister engaged in intensive diplomatic outreach with multiple nations, including Pakistan, whose government could relay messages to Washington and maintain communication channels.
Tasnim stated that Araghchi conducted telephone conversations with senior officials from Pakistan, Qatar, Turkey, France, and Belgium to address the situation in Lebanon amid Israeli military operations and diplomatic initiatives related to ceasefire and de-escalation efforts.
IRNA corroborated this reporting, publishing details of Araghchi’s outreach to Pakistan, including discussions with both Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir on Tuesday. However, both state media outlets limited their coverage of conversation substance to vague references about regional developments and ceasefire efforts.
The initial Monday report from Tasnim News suggesting Iran had suspended peace negotiations sparked international alarm that the fragile ceasefire between America and Iran established during Operation Epic Fury could collapse. That report emphasized Tehran’s demand for an end to Israeli operations in Lebanon. Yet on the same day, IRNA quoted Araghchi as declaring that talks and message exchanges between Iran and the United States continue, dismissing alternative reports as speculation.
Further complicating the picture, the independent outlet Iran International reported Sunday that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had drafted a resignation letter, complaining that IRGC interference rendered civilian government leadership impossible. While Pezeshkian reportedly denied resignation intentions, that controversy was overshadowed by the IRGC’s alleged shutdown of American talks.
President Trump responded to the situation Monday with phone calls to leaders within the jihadist terror organization Hezbollah and to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu concerning the Lebanon conflict, as Breitbart News reports.
