Iran Attacks US Base Despite Ceasefire in Place
Iran launched a retaliatory strike on a U.S. military base after American airstrikes hit Iranian targets, threatening a fragile ceasefire in effect since April 8.
Iranian state television confirmed the attack, while Kuwait also reported coming under rocket and drone fire overnight, according to Nius. The Kuwaiti military acknowledged that the country was targeted but provided no further details in its initial statement. Kuwait has been repeatedly targeted by Iranian or pro-Iranian forces in recent months.
The Iranian response came after American forces conducted fresh strikes on Iranian territory. A United States government official confirmed that American military personnel shot down four Iranian drones and struck a military installation in Bandar Abbas just as another drone was being prepared for launch. Washington justified the action by stating the drones posed a direct threat to the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian media outlets reported multiple heavy explosions near Bandar Abbas in the southern part of the country during the night leading into Thursday. The timing of the detonations aligns with the reported American strikes on the military base.
The exchange of fire comes despite an ongoing ceasefire between Iran and the United States that has been in effect since April 8. Negotiations for a permanent end to hostilities are currently underway, though the latest violence casts doubt on their prospects. The United States maintains numerous military installations around the Persian Gulf region.
The ceasefire agreement has proven shaky from the start. The United Arab Emirates and other Gulf states have also reported sporadic attacks in recent days. The Strait of Hormuz area in particular has seen repeated clashes between American military forces and Iranian units, despite the supposed truce.
The overnight escalation represents one of the most serious violations of the ceasefire since it took effect and raises questions about whether diplomatic efforts can contain the cycle of attacks and reprisals. With American bases scattered throughout the Gulf and Iranian forces maintaining an aggressive posture, the potential for further confrontation remains high.
