Iran and U.S. Reach Deal to Pause Conflict, Begin Negotiations
Iran and the United States agreed to pause hostilities and hold direct negotiations Tuesday in Qatar after military strikes by both nations stemming from disputes over a memorandum.
According to Breitbart News, a senior U.S. official confirmed to Axios that both nations reached the agreement and are scheduled to meet Tuesday in Qatar to resolve the crisis.
The recent military confrontation stems from what officials describe as competing interpretations of a Memorandum of Understanding previously signed by both countries. The disputed provisions center specifically on the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global energy supplies.
A senior U.S. official told the outlet that Washington had decided to stop all kinetic activity as part of the de-escalation effort.
The contentious MOU language addresses American naval operations in the region. As Breitbart News reported, one provision states that the United States will begin removing its naval blockade and any impediments against the Islamic Republic of Iran immediately upon signing, with full removal to be completed within 30 days. The agreement further stipulates that vessel traffic will be proportional to pre-war levels and that U.S. forces will withdraw from proximity to Iran within 30 days after a final deal.
Simon Kent at Breitbart News reported that Iran launched strikes targeting Bahrain and Kuwait in response to U.S. airstrikes that hit the Islamic Republic. The American military action came after U.S. Central Command announced Saturday that forces carried out another round of strikes on Iran following an Iranian attack on a Panama-flagged oil tanker.
President Donald Trump disclosed the American military operation in a post on Truth Social Saturday, revealing that U.S. aircraft struck Iranian missile and drone storage locations and coastal radar sites after Iran violated a ceasefire agreement. The President issued a stark warning that continued Iranian violations could force Washington to take conclusive military action.
Trump declared that U.S. aircraft had just struck the Iranian military targets for violating the ceasefire agreement again. He suggested that Tehran may never learn from its actions, warning that a point may come when the United States can no longer exercise restraint and will be forced to militarily complete the job. Trump stated that if such action becomes necessary, the Islamic Republic of Iran would cease to exist.
The scheduled Qatar talks represent a critical diplomatic opening amid one of the most serious direct military confrontations between Washington and Tehran in recent years. The outcome of Tuesday’s negotiations could determine whether the current pause holds or whether the region faces further escalation.
