The ROC had its membership suspended in October 2023 when it moved to absorb sporting organizations operating in Ukrainian territories under Russian military control, according to The European Conservative.

The IOC announced that it has now reversed its decision after confirming that the Russian Olympic Committee no longer includes the contested regional sports bodies within its structure. The international sports authority also received assurances from the ROC that it would refrain from conducting any activities in areas falling under the authority of Ukraine’s National Olympic Committee.

The suspension had marked one of the more significant institutional responses by international sporting bodies to Russia’s ongoing military operations in Ukraine. The decision to lift the measure signals a technical compliance by Moscow with IOC requirements, though questions remain about the broader relationship between Russian sports institutions and occupied territories.

The reinstatement comes as international sporting bodies continue to navigate the complex politics surrounding Russian participation in global competitions following the 2022 escalation of the conflict in Ukraine.
