ICE Detainee Dies at Delaney Hall After Illegal Re-Entry
A previously deported Salvadoran man died at a New Jersey detention facility after a medical emergency while awaiting removal following his illegal re-entry into the United States.
Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, aged 41, died on August 1 at University Hospital in Newark following a medical emergency while being held at the Delaney Hall Detention Facility, as New York Post reports. Staff from GEO Group, the private company operating the facility, responded to the incident alongside medical personnel and contacted emergency services.
ICE stated that the official cause of death is awaiting results from a formal medical examination.
History of Illegal Entry and Deportation
Lopez-Cornejo first entered the United States illegally on or around August 13, 2006, when he was apprehended by US Border Patrol. A Department of Justice immigration judge issued a removal order on August 25, 2006, and he was subsequently deported to El Salvador on October 19, 2006.
Despite the deportation, Lopez-Cornejo illegally re-entered the United States at an unknown date. ICE officers arrested him in Plainfield, New Jersey, on June 18. He remained detained at Delaney Hall pending removal under the reinstatement of his original removal order.
According to ICE, Lopez-Cornejo received appropriate medical care throughout his detention period. The agency has notified Department of Homeland Security oversight offices, the Consulate of El Salvador in Elizabeth, and Lopez-Cornejo’s next of kin.
Political Response and Facility Criticism
The death prompted immediate criticism from New Jersey officials who have long called for the closure of Delaney Hall. Governor Mikie Sherrill expressed disturbance at the incident, stating her administration is working with the congressional delegation to gather facts about the death.
Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka condemned what he described as inadequate oversight at the facility, noting this marked another family loss in less than a year. Another detainee, Jean Wilson Brutus, 41, died on December 12, 2025, after experiencing a medical emergency less than 24 hours after arriving at the facility.
The New Jersey detention center has faced repeated accusations from state and local inspectors of obstructing health and safety inspections. The facility has also been the site of ongoing protests and detainee hunger strikes concerning food quality, overcrowding, and medical care standards.
