Joaquin Escoto Vazquez, a 28-year-old Mexican national residing illegally in the United States, was taken into custody by the Modesto Police Department and charged with homicide and cruelty toward a child, according to Breitbart News. The charges stem from the alleged murder of an infant, 23-year-old Fabiola Gonzalez-Nunez, and 54-year-old Maria Sylvia Nunez-Villalobos.

Police reports indicate that Vazquez allegedly stabbed all three victims at a Modesto residence. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found Vazquez had fled, but discovered the infant, Gonzalez-Nunez, and Nunez-Villalobos suffering from stab wounds. Both adult women were pronounced dead at the scene, while the infant was transported to a hospital where the child later died.

History of Arrests and Ignored Federal Detainers

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials revealed to Breitbart News that Vazquez had been arrested on four separate occasions in California for driving under the influence. His most recent drunk driving arrest occurred in June 2025, prompting ICE agents to file a detainer with the San Joaquin County Jail requesting notification before his release.

California’s statewide sanctuary law ensured that the ICE detainer was disregarded, and Vazquez was released back into the community without federal authorities being notified.

ICE has now placed another detainer on Vazquez with the Stanislaus County Jail, urging local officials to inform them of any potential release.

DHS Official Condemns Sanctuary Policies

Lauren Bis of the Department of Homeland Security issued a scathing statement condemning California’s sanctuary framework. This monster’s heinous crime could have been prevented if sanctuary politicians in California simply cooperated with ICE law enforcement, Bis stated.

She further emphasized that the criminal illegal alien from Mexico now faces charges of homicide and cruelty toward a child after the fatal stabbings of a baby, the baby’s mother, and the baby’s grandmother. Bis called on Governor Newsom and his fellow sanctuary politicians to stop endangering lives by releasing criminals from jails into California communities where they create more victims.

Prior Deportation and Re-Entry

Vazquez first illegally entered the United States through the southern border into California in 2018 but was deported during the first Trump administration. He later illegally re-entered the country at an unknown date as a so-called got-away, evading border patrol detection.

The triple homicide has reignited debate over California’s sanctuary state laws and their impact on public safety, with federal officials arguing that cooperation with immigration enforcement could prevent violent crimes committed by repeat offenders who remain in the country illegally.
