ICE Arrests Violent Criminal Illegal After Chicago Sets Him Free
Federal immigration officers in Chicago arrested a violent illegal alien felon with gang ties after local police released him despite an active federal warrant under sanctuary policies.
According to Breitbart News, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers arrested Luis Manuel Saucedo-Cardenas, a 40-year-old Mexican national with an extensive criminal history spanning multiple violent offenses. The Chicago Police Department had previously held Saucedo-Cardenas in custody but released him rather than transferring him to federal immigration authorities.
Extensive Criminal Record and Gang Ties
ICE officials report that Saucedo-Cardenas possesses a lengthy rap sheet including multiple arrests for assault, carjacking, controlled substance violations, and a prison sentence for wire fraud. Authorities identify him as a former member of the La Raza street gang, an organization that primarily operates in the Chicago area but has expanded its criminal enterprises to Florida, Georgia, and several western states.
Federal immigration authorities had previously removed Saucedo-Cardenas from the United States in 2022. A federal criminal arrest warrant was subsequently issued for illegal re-entry, which the Chicago Police Department confirmed receiving on May 1 while Saucedo-Cardenas remained in their custody.
Sanctuary Policies Override Federal Warrants
Despite confirming awareness of the active federal warrant and receiving multiple requests from ICE, the Chicago Police Department refused to transfer custody of the repeat offender to immigration enforcement. Operating under sanctuary policies enacted by local politicians, Chicago authorities instead released Saucedo-Cardenas back onto city streets.
Tammy Marich, ICE Chicago Acting Field Office Director, expressed sharp criticism of the decision. The Chicago Police Department knowingly jeopardized the public’s safety by releasing a dangerous suspect with a federal criminal arrest warrant, Marich stated, adding that politics provide no excuse for sanctuary politicians to threaten the well-being of communities they claim to serve.
Detainer System Bypassed
ICE emphasizes that the safest method for arresting criminal illegal aliens begins with lodging immigration detainers. These requests ask law enforcement agencies to notify ICE before releasing a removable alien, or to hold the individual for up to 48 hours beyond normal release time to allow federal custody transfer under immigration law.
The Chicago Police Department has established a long-standing pattern of refusing to honor such detainers or cooperate with ICE when illegal aliens are arrested for suspected criminal acts within the sanctuary city.
Deadly Consequences of Non-Cooperation
The failure to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement has produced devastating consequences for Chicago residents, as Breitbart News reports. Jose Medina-Medina, a 25-year-old illegal alien from Venezuela, stands charged with murdering Sheridan Gorman, an 18-year-old Loyola University freshman, in a random attack at Tobey Prinz Beach on March 19.
Records indicate that Medina-Medina crossed the southwest border in 2023 and was released to pursue asylum claims. Within months of arriving in Chicago, local authorities arrested him on shoplifting charges but released him under Chicago and Illinois sanctuary policies rather than transferring him to ICE for removal proceedings.
The repeat pattern of sanctuary jurisdictions releasing criminal illegal aliens with active warrants or pending immigration violations continues to generate friction between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities across multiple American cities.
