ICE Arrests Illegal Who Killed Man While Watching YouTube
A Russian national who illegally entered the U.S. in 2022 and killed a Minnesota truck driver while watching YouTube has been detained by ICE and awaits deportation.
Immigration enforcement officials have detained a Russian national illegally present in the United States who admitted to watching a YouTube video while driving moments before a fatal collision that killed a truck driver in Minnesota last year.
Georgii Gabiev, who unlawfully crossed into the United States in 2022 and was subsequently released by the Biden administration, struck and killed Tim Tarnowski on March 5, 2024, on a rural road in Chippewa County, according to New York Post. The Russian national ran through a stop sign while viewing English language instruction content on an iPad.
Despite pleading guilty to criminal vehicular manslaughter, Gabiev served merely 120 days behind bars. He informed investigators he was engaged with an English learning program on his device at the time of the deadly crash, as reported by the Star Tribune.
ICE enforcement personnel apprehended Gabiev in Brooklyn on June 9. He now remains in federal custody awaiting deportation proceedings.
Tammy Tarnowski, widow of the victim, received personal notification of the arrest from DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin. She expressed that while her husband cannot be returned, the apprehension delivers needed accountability.
The bereaved widow stated her family can now pursue closure and begin necessary healing. She voiced hopes that this case will illuminate the struggles of Angel Families and prevent others from experiencing similar anguish.
Secretary Mullin condemned the circumstances that permitted Gabiev entry and presence on American roads. He attributed the tragedy directly to open border policies implemented under the previous administration, asserting Tim Tarnowski would remain alive had proper immigration controls been enforced.
Angel Families refers to a growing coalition of Americans who have lost relatives to crimes committed by illegal immigrants. The Trump administration has elevated these families’ stories as central to its immigration enforcement priorities.
