Human Smuggling Stash House Busted, Illegal Alien Fugitive Arrested
Texas state troopers arrested two suspected smugglers and four Honduran nationals at an Eagle Pass hotel used as a stash house, with two of the migrants having gang ties and outstanding warrants.
The operation unfolded on May 29 shortly after midnight when Department of Public Safety troopers responded to a tip and arrived at the hotel. A female suspect inside the room permitted officers to conduct a search after they detected a strong odor of marijuana. Upon entry, troopers discovered a second female suspect and four illegal aliens hidden within the room.
Department of Public Safety spokesman Lieutenant Chris Olivarez released body camera footage on social media documenting the search operation. The video shows troopers contacting the two female suspects before discovering the concealed illegal aliens.
Texas authorities identified two of the Honduran nationals as Joseph Angel Guzman and Daniel Castillo Dionisio, both 21 years old. U.S. Customs and Border Protection records indicate both men have prior histories of illegal reentry into the United States and alien inadmissibility.
DPS troopers believe Guzman and Dionisio are affiliated with the Rollin’ 30’s Crips gang. Further investigation revealed that Dionisio is wanted by the New Orleans Police Department on multiple felony charges including armed robbery and aggravated assault with a firearm.
Dionisio was booked into Maverick County Jail where he awaits extradition to New Orleans on the outstanding warrants. The two female suspects, Juella Monet Brown, 27, of Grandview, Missouri, and Starr Ricki Drake, 26, of Euless, Texas, were arrested and charged with operating a stash house. Both were booked into Maverick County Jail pending prosecution on state criminal charges.
Guzman and the two remaining Honduran illegal aliens were transferred to Border Patrol custody for processing, potential federal prosecution, and removal proceedings.
The arrests form part of Operation Lone Star, the comprehensive border security initiative launched by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The operation continues despite dramatically reduced border crossing numbers under President Trump’s enforcement-focused border security measures.
The stricter enforcement environment has compelled human smugglers to adapt their tactics, increasingly relying on stash houses and deep concealment methods to hide illegal aliens inside vehicles. Smuggling organizations have also shifted to moving people through difficult remote terrain in efforts to evade apprehension by Border Patrol and Texas Highway Patrol troopers.
Under Operation Lone Star, Texas DPS Highway Patrol conducts operations designed to intercept illegal aliens who evade Border Patrol arrest. These efforts include patrolling remote highways, conducting tracking operations on foot and horseback in isolated areas, and identifying stash houses through intelligence-driven operations.
