House Dems Demand ICE Shooting Probe Without Interference
Nearly 200 House Democrats are calling for an independent investigation into two fatal shootings by ICE agents and demanding witnesses be protected from deportation threats.
Democratic Representatives Pramila Jayapal of Washington, Sylvia Garcia of Texas, Chellie Pingree of Maine, Jamie Raskin of Maryland, and Bennie Thompson of Mississippi spearheaded the letter, which was signed by nearly the entire House Democratic Caucus, according to Emily Hallas writing in Washington Examiner.
The lawmakers are seeking a full investigation into the deaths of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Joan Sebastian Guerrero, both of whom were killed by ICE agents in separate incidents within days of each other. The letter also calls for a halt to removal proceedings against witnesses to the incidents.
The Democrats specifically requested that investigators be granted access to testimony from Jose Trinidad Rojas Pliego, Daniel Tirado Pantoja, and Victor Hugo Salgado Araujo, without threat of retaliation or deportation hanging over the witnesses.
The letter to Mullin argued that the fatal shootings demand real accountability and immediate action to prevent further violence. The lawmakers warned that failure to impose meaningful consequences sends a message to the department that agents can act with impunity.
Maine Shooting During Enforcement Operation
Guerrero, a 25-year-old Colombian national working as a food delivery driver, was shot and killed on Monday during an ICE operation in Maine. He had entered the United States illegally during the Biden administration but was later granted a work permit.
Secretary Mullin confirmed that Guerrero was not the original target of the enforcement action. According to the Department of Homeland Security, Guerrero came to ICE’s attention when he attempted to flee officers in a vehicle during an operation targeting a different illegal immigrant who had a final removal order. An officer shot Guerrero, claiming concerns for public safety.
Mufalo Chitam, Executive Director of the Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition, questioned why a life was lost if Guerrero was not the intended target, noting he was authorized to work and had a Social Security number.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris has also called for an investigation into Guerrero’s death.
Texas Traffic Stop Turns Deadly
Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican national, was fatally shot by ICE last week during a traffic stop. The Department of Homeland Security claims officers fired after Araujo allegedly attempted to ram them with his vehicle.
Democrats have questioned this account, pointing to similar self-defense claims made by DHS in Minneapolis earlier this year that were later contradicted by video evidence.
Kendall Scudder, Texas Democratic Party Chairman, said no one is suggesting law enforcement should not protect themselves when facing genuine threats, but emphasized that the public cannot simply be asked to accept an official version of events without transparency.
The letter from House Democrats represents a significant escalation in congressional scrutiny of ICE enforcement operations under the current administration, with lawmakers demanding accountability mechanisms to prevent what they characterize as reckless actions resulting in preventable deaths.
