Hispanic Caucus Chair Defends ICE Funding Votes, Claims Money for Other Programs
Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairman Adriano Espaillat defended his votes funding DHS and ICE by citing food assistance programs in the bills and attacked his challenger over campaign donations.
The New York Democrat made the remarks during an appearance on MSNBC’s “The Briefing” on Friday when pressed by host Jen Psaki about criticism from a political opponent regarding his support for DHS and ICE funding bills.
Espaillat justified his votes by emphasizing that the appropriations measures contained substantial allocations for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children.
The congressman characterized the funding legislation as administration priorities that delivered critical support during the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent economic challenges. He argued that lawmakers had an obligation to approve funding for essential programs to sustain American families through difficult periods.
Espaillat also faced questions about campaign contributions he received from contractors who do business with ICE, as Breitbart News reports.
Rather than address the donations directly, the Hispanic Caucus leader pivoted to attacking his challenger, claiming she lacked understanding of her own social media statements and alleging she accepted 1.5 million dollars from a wealthy Texas donor who previously supported Republican Governor Greg Abbott.
The congressman concluded his response by suggesting his opponent possessed inadequate knowledge of the legislative process itself.
The exchange highlights ongoing tensions within the Democratic Party between establishment lawmakers who have consistently voted for government funding bills and progressive challengers who view votes for immigration enforcement agencies as disqualifying.
