Hawley Demands MLB Explain Giants Pride Night Controversy
Senator Josh Hawley launched an inquiry into Major League Baseball after three San Francisco Giants pitchers were warned for writing Bible verse references on Pride Night caps.
The Missouri Republican sent a formal letter to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred questioning what he characterized as a troubling double standard in the league’s enforcement of uniform policies.
Landen Roupp, JT Brubaker, and Ryan Walker received official warnings after writing references to Genesis 9 on rainbow-themed Pride Night caps during a game at Oracle Park last week, as New York Post reports.
Hawley pointed to what he views as selective enforcement by the league, noting that MLB actively promoted social justice messaging throughout the 2020 season but took disciplinary action when players expressed religious faith. The senator argued that the league moved beyond merely permitting speech to actively designing and promoting political messages, yet penalized players for adding a handful of scriptural references.
MLB has defended its actions by stating the warnings had nothing to do with the religious content of the messages. League officials described the response as routine enforcement of uniform regulations that prohibit any added writing or messages on equipment and uniforms.
The league noted that players have previously received similar warnings for messages including tributes to parents and family names, suggesting the policy is applied consistently regardless of content.
The incident has sparked strong reactions from conservative leaders and public figures. Vice President JD Vance weighed in on social media, while comedian Rob Schneider publicly offered to cover any future fines imposed on players who display Bible verses on their uniforms, calling the league’s position anti-Christian.
Hawley’s letter demands comprehensive documentation regarding MLB’s uniform policies, disciplinary records, and guidelines concerning religious expression. The senator has set a June 19 deadline for the league’s response.
The warnings were issued during the Giants’ annual Pride Night celebration, an event dedicated to the LGBTQ community that has been part of the franchise’s regular programming for several years.
