Gov. Beshear Calls for Abolishing Electoral College
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear called for abolishing the Electoral College in favor of direct popular presidential elections during a CBS Face The Nation interview this weekend.
The Democratic governor made his remarks during an interview on CBS’s Face The Nation, according to Breitbart News, where he outlined what he described as bold proposals to reform both the economy and the federal government.
When asked by host Ed O’Keefe about his most ambitious policy ideas, Beshear proposed a sweeping constitutional amendment that would fundamentally alter the American electoral system alongside other major governmental changes.
The Kentucky governor’s proposed constitutional amendment would outlaw partisan redistricting, establish term limits for both Congress and the Supreme Court, overturn the Citizens United decision, and eliminate the Electoral College in favor of direct presidential elections.
When O’Keefe pressed him to confirm his position on abolishing the Electoral College, Beshear doubled down, arguing that states like Kentucky never see presidential candidates campaign there because the outcome is already presumed.
Beshear justified his position by claiming that direct elections would force candidates to earn votes across the entire United States rather than focusing on a handful of swing states. He suggested this would somehow improve the electoral process, despite the fact that the Electoral College was deliberately designed by the Founding Fathers to protect the interests of smaller states and prevent mob rule through pure majoritarianism.
The governor’s proposal represents a direct assault on the constitutional framework that has governed American presidential elections since the nation’s founding. The Electoral College ensures that presidential candidates must build geographically diverse coalitions rather than simply running up vote totals in high-population coastal areas.
Beshear also advocated for expansive housing investment tied to federal dollars, calling for government intervention to address home ownership costs while simultaneously complaining about what he termed overregulation.
The governor’s call to abolish the Electoral College aligns with progressive Democrats who have sought to eliminate the system following recent Republican presidential victories where the Electoral College outcome differed from the popular vote.
