Representative Andy Ogles of Tennessee and Senator Rick Scott of Florida have put forward the Tiananmen Square Memorial Act of 2026, unveiled on the 37th anniversary of the deadly crackdown by Chinese communist forces.

The legislation would officially redesignate the area along International Place Northwest between 3501 International Drive Northwest and 3507 International Place Northwest in Washington, District of Columbia, as Tiananmen Square Memorial Boulevard. The bill mandates that all future references in United States laws, maps, regulations, documents, and official records would reflect the new designation.

Under the proposed measure, the Administrator of General Services would be required to construct street signs bearing the phrase Tiananmen Square Memorial Boulevard. The signs would follow a design similar to those used by the District of Columbia for Metro station markers and would be placed on the closest federal property parcel to the renamed boulevard, as well as at the street corners of International Drive Northwest and Van Ness Street Northwest, and International Drive Northwest and International Place Northwest.

Senator Scott emphasized in a statement that the world witnessed the Chinese Communist Party’s brutality three decades ago when peaceful demonstrators were murdered in cold blood for opposing the communist regime. The CCP has shown no remorse for this horrific event, has never taken accountability, and continues to commit severe human rights violations to this day, he noted.

The Florida Republican stated that this legislation honors the memory of the courageous victims of the Tiananmen Square massacre while condemning the heinous human rights abuses committed by the Chinese Communist Party.

Representative Ogles declared that China remains ruled by an immoral, genocidal Communist regime. He noted that the anniversary marks 37 years since the Chinese government attacked its own people, mowing them down in the streets and murdering thousands of innocent demonstrators.

As the CCP continues its reign of terror, America must unequivocally condemn its human rights abuses and honor the victims who were slaughtered in 1989, Ogles stated. He expressed pride in partnering with Senator Scott on the initiative, adding that while the CCP may try to erase history, we will not forget.

The symbolic gesture would place a permanent reminder of the massacre directly in front of the Chinese diplomatic mission in the nation’s capital, forcing Beijing’s representatives to confront the memory of the regime’s violent suppression of pro-democracy demonstrators every day.
