Twenty members of a coordinated sexual exploitation network have received combined prison sentences totaling 277 years following the conclusion of six separate trials at Leeds Crown Court, as Breitbart News reports.
West Yorkshire Police confirmed that the convictions relate to systematic grooming offences committed primarily in Batley and Dewsbury between 1995 and 2003. The investigation centered on the abuse of three young girls, with one victim targeted for exploitation at just 12 years of age.
Detective Chief Inspector Rob Stevens of Kirklees District Police characterized the case as stemming from “appalling sexual abuse of vulnerable girls in Kirklees by a large number of sexual predators.” Court reporting restrictions, which had remained in place since the trials began in July 2023, were finally lifted this week, allowing full details of the convictions to be made public.
Pattern of Systematic Abuse
The investigation revealed a disturbing pattern of repeated sexual assault. Victims were subjected to systematic abuse, with perpetrators in several instances supplying Class A drugs to their victims. DCI Stevens emphasized that the defendants treated their victims as commodities rather than as human beings deserving of protection.
The sentences imposed reflect the severity of the offences. Sajid Majid, 53, received 28 years imprisonment for five rape convictions and three counts of indecent assault. Manaf Hussain, 51, was sentenced to 25 years for six rape convictions and drug supply offences. Tariq Azam, 57, received 24 years for five rape convictions and four indecent assault counts.
Other significant sentences included Zulfiqar Ali, 47, handed 22 years and six months; Aurrangzeb Azam, 56, sentenced to 20 years for ten separate rape convictions; and Shakeel Haq, 58, who received 19 years for rape and false imprisonment offences.
Additional Convictions
Further convictions included Rafiq Patel, 73, sentenced to 18 years; Zaheed Ali Novsarka, 58, also 18 years; Mohammed Sheikh, 53, receiving 14 years; and Mohammed Yasin, 52, handed 14 years for rape and indecent assault convictions. Liaquat Hussain Hanif, 49, received 12 years and six months, while Ebrahim Mananiat, 56, was sentenced to 12 years.
Sentences of 11 years were imposed on Ibrahim Khalifa, 87, and Shafiq Siddique, 56. Mohammed Munir Shaffi, 48, received nine years; Mohammed Ishtiaq Hussain, 51, was sentenced to eight years; and Abbas Kaji, 57, received seven years. Donna Lynn, 45, from Cleckheatan, received three years for controlling prostitution, while Tasawar Hussain, 46, was sentenced to three years for a single rape conviction.
In a separate prior conviction, Ansar Mahmood Qayum, 49, who received 10 years for three rape and two indecent assault convictions in this case, had an existing 20-year sentence from 2022, bringing his total custodial term to 30 years.
Victim Courage Emphasized
DCI Stevens attributed the successful prosecutions to the courage of victims who came forward to report their abuse. He noted that the substantial prison terms handed down, particularly the 28-year and 20-year sentences, reflected the gravity and depravity of the offending.
The detective emphasized that victims demonstrated “enormous bravery” in providing evidence throughout the lengthy trials, and expressed hope that justice had been properly served through the incarceration of offenders who have no place in society.
