G7 Leaders Feast on Caviar and $7K Wine After Poverty Pledge
G7 leaders gathered in Evian to pledge action against global poverty before dining on caviar and wine costing up to $7,000 per bottle at an extravagant banquet.
According to a leaked menu obtained by the outlet, attendees including President Trump dined on Osetra caviar accompanied by egg and pea velouté, followed by roasted poultry served with local crayfish, white asparagus and wild mushrooms at the nearby Hôtel Royal Evian on Tuesday evening.
The heads of state and government, along with senior international officials, paired the meal with magnums of Château Mouton Rothschild, including a 1982 vintage that currently retails for approximately $7,000 per bottle. Champagne Drappier Grande Sendrée and Cognac Remy Martin also flowed freely at the gathering.
Emmanuel Macron’s official chef Fabrice Desvignes prepared the carefully guarded culinary program, which showcased delicacies from across France. The menu also featured cheeses from the host region of Savoie and grand cru chocolate with citrus.
The opulent spread stood in stark contrast to the summit’s official declaration, which emphasized that excessive macroeconomic imbalances, crises and conflicts, lingering poverty and debt vulnerabilities disproportionately harm the most vulnerable nations.
The G7, representing the wealthiest democracies worldwide, stated their development priorities focus on strengthening food security, nutrition and health in the least developed countries.
Historic Venue With Royal Connections
The Hotel Royal, accessible by a 40-minute ferry ride across Lake Leman from Lausanne in Switzerland, has catered to the global elite since 1909.
The establishment received its regal designation in honor of British King Edward VII, who was expected to be among its inaugural guests but died in 1910 before ever visiting. The royal name remained nonetheless.
Trump to Receive Further French Hospitality
France will continue its lavish hosting of the American president later Wednesday. Macron’s office announced the French leader will receive Trump for dinner at the Palace of Versailles to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence, describing the venue as a historic symbol of Franco-American friendship.
The palace served as the residence of French monarchs from Louis XIV through Louis XVI. It routinely hosts heads of state and foreign dignitaries.
Macron previously welcomed King Charles III and Queen Camilla to the location in 2021 for the palace’s 400th anniversary, with a dinner held in the Hall of Mirrors, one of the signature features among the palace’s 2,300 rooms.
