French soldier, 21, killed in accidental shooting during Lebanon training
A 21-year-old French soldier was killed by accidental gunfire during a training exercise in southern Lebanon, marking the second French military death there this year.
Florian Gillet, serving with France’s operational military partnership detachment in Saliyeh, southern Lebanon, died on Wednesday after the incident occurred during the preparatory phase of an exercise designed to train Lebanese armed forces, according to Valeurs Actuelles.
Despite immediate intervention by emergency medical personnel on site, the young serviceman succumbed to his injuries moments after the shooting. An investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances of the fatal discharge and establish any potential accountability.
Gillet had arrived in Lebanon only on June 1st and was serving as an infantry combat training assistant in a military cooperation mission supporting the Lebanese army. Such deployments form part of France’s broader strategy to bolster Lebanese armed forces, which Paris views as a critical stabilizing element in a particularly tense regional environment.
General Fabien Mandon, Chief of Staff of the French Armed Forces, paid tribute to the fallen soldier, honoring the memory of this serviceman who died on operational duty and extending condolences to his family, brothers-in-arms, and loved ones.
Second French Military Death in Lebanon This Year
France maintains multiple military deployments in Lebanon, including bilateral military cooperation programs and its participation in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. Since the Middle East conflagration that erupted in autumn 2023, French military personnel operating in the region have faced a significantly deteriorated security environment.
This marks the second French military fatality in Lebanon within recent months. In April, 31-year-old serviceman Anicet Girardin lost his life after being severely wounded during a mission in the country. Weeks earlier in March, Major Arnaud Frion was killed in Iraq in an attack attributed to a pro-Iranian armed group.
The succession of casualties underscores the heightened dangers confronting French forces in Middle Eastern operational zones, where regional instability has intensified considerably over the past year.
