Farage’s Reform UK Vows to Defund Councils Over Women’s Spaces

The Supreme Court ruled in a precedent-setting case that legal categories such as “women” refer to biological sex rather than gender identity, according to Breitbart News. The decision means biological males who identify as women cannot claim protections and benefits specifically designated for biological females under British law.

Following the ruling, public institutions and businesses serving the public are required to maintain single-sex spaces, including female-only toilets and changing facilities.

However, resistance is mounting among left-wing councils. The Lambeth Council in London has publicly committed to ignoring the directive, vowing to continue permitting transgender individuals unrestricted access to traditionally female-only spaces. Five additional London boroughs have similarly declared their intention to pursue an “inclusive” policy, arguing that protecting women’s spaces constitutes an attack on transgender rights.

That defiance may come at a steep price. Reform UK has pledged to use the £90 billion Local Government Finance Settlements—which allocate taxes and grants across the country—as leverage against non-compliant councils, as Breitbart News reports.

Robert Jenrick, Reform UK’s Shadow Chancellor, outlined the policy in stark terms. Under a Reform Government, councils that seek to redefine what a woman is will get zero public funds, he announced, adding that leftist councils like Lambeth have no authority to override basic biology and common sense.

Shadow Education Secretary Suella Braverman reinforced the message, stating that successive governments have attempted policies, guidance, and court challenges to no avail. She condemned what she described as militant councils treating taxpayers with contempt and pledged that Reform UK would not permit taxpayer funds to support harmful ideologies. Councils should concentrate on service delivery rather than virtue-signalling, she said.

The party has indicated it intends to apply the same financial enforcement to councils that resist cooperation on other government priorities, including deportation operations, an issue on which some local authorities have already expressed opposition.

The announcement follows Reform UK’s recent commitment to deploy the Royal Navy in the English Channel to intercept and turn back migrant boats to France as part of its crackdown on illegal immigration.
