Étampes neighborhood party turns into ambush against police
A neighborhood festival in Étampes, France, turned violent when police responding to disturbances were ambushed with mortars and rocks, leading to four arrests.
According to Valeurs Actuelles, the municipal celebration known as “Étampes en Fête” had been carefully organized as a family-friendly event in the Guinette neighborhood, an area already notorious for vehicle arsons, mortar attacks, and drug trafficking. The festivities were meant to bring residents together with music, food stands, carnival rides, inflatable structures, sports activities, and other entertainment for all ages and generations.
However, what was intended as a wholesome community gathering turned into a scene of urban violence on Friday, June 6th, when law enforcement found itself under deliberate attack. Around 11:50 PM on Rue de la Mousson, near the Étampes penitentiary and Nelson Mandela high school, officers encountered a hostile trap that had been prepared specifically to target them.
Police sources revealed that a roadblock had been constructed and an attempt made to set it ablaze, a tactic that has become disturbingly common in certain French neighborhoods. Officers from the CDI and BAC units of Étampes who responded to the scene came under fire from mortars and were pelted with rocks.
The violence forced law enforcement to deploy non-lethal weapons, including flashball launchers known as LBD, to defend themselves against the rioters. One police vehicle sustained minor damage from projectiles during the confrontation.
Four Suspects Arrested After Investigation
Authorities initially arrested two individuals at the scene, followed by a third. A fourth suspect was later formally identified by BAC officers through the city’s video surveillance system and was subsequently located and arrested without incident. All four were placed in police custody.
Despite the evidence against them, the three initially detained suspects denied the charges. However, investigators were able to confirm their presence during the preparation of the ambush through surveillance footage from the city’s camera network.
The accused range in age from 15 to 19 years old and are all residents of Étampes. Following their detention, two were brought before the judicial court in Évry-Courcouronnes, while the other two minors are scheduled to appear before juvenile justice authorities at a later date.
The adult suspect, identified as Lounes Z., reportedly has a history of previous offenses according to local sources. He will be summoned for a CRPC proceeding, a streamlined guilty plea procedure. A local source suggested the attack was a way for him to earn status in the neighborhood.
Former Mayor Expresses Alarm Over Escalating Violence
Franck Marlin, who served as mayor of Étampes for six consecutive terms before stepping down earlier this year, expressed deep concern when contacted by Valeurs Actuelles about the incident. He stated he could not understand how anyone would use a festive community event as a pretext for such violence.
Marlin noted that during his tenure he had deployed numerous and costly measures to prevent fires and urban violence in the city, particularly around the July 14th national holiday. He also revealed that similar coordinated urban violence had occurred in the Guinette neighborhood in the days preceding the festival attack.
The incident underscores the deteriorating security situation in certain French suburban areas, where what was once innocent teenage mischief has evolved into organized violent ambushes targeting law enforcement officers attempting to maintain public order during community celebrations.
